Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends showcases a wide variety of Anne's favorite female vocalists. Among the albumβs tracks and collaborating artists are "Snowbird" with Sarah Brightman, "You Needed Me" with Shania Twain, "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" with Anneβs daughter Dawn Langstroth, "Danny's Song" with Martina McBride, βAnother Pot Oβ Teaβ with Emmylou Harris, βA Little Good Newsβ with Indigo Girls, βCotton Jenny" with Olivia Newton-John, βCould I Have This Danceβ with Amy Grant, βDaydream Believerβ with Nelly Furtado, βA Love Songβ with k.d. lang, βTime Donβt Run Out On Meβ with the songβs writer, Carole King, and more.
In 1979, Anne and Dusty Springfield each recorded the song "I Just Fall In Love Again." Anne's version became a hit single that garnered her Canadaβs Juno Award for "Single of the Year" in 1980. Anne and Dusty remained friends until Dustyβs passing in 1999, and for Anne, releasing an album with this type of sisterly theme wouldn't seem complete without Dusty's inclusion. With the blessing of the Springfield family and estate, a new version pairing Dusty's original with Anneβs newly recorded vocals is featured on the album.
Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends was produced by one of the most respected music producers in the world, Phil Ramone (Tony Bennett, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Barbra Streisand, Billy Joel), who counts 14 Grammy Awards and 32 Grammy nominations among his many honors. Together, Anne and Phil decided they would treat the songs on their own terms and not adhere rigidly to the arrangements of Anneβs classic versions. While Anne had designs on how she imagined the arrangements, she gave Phil free rein to rework the songs.
βWe approached the sessions as if we were just handed these songs and told to make this record,β explains Ramone. βWhile arrangements were changed, there are also licks on some songs that I didnβt mess with. We stayed true to the song.β
Working with Anne for the first time, Ramone adds, was an easy task. βWhat I love about Anne is there are no words minced about whatever she feels,β he says. βThis is not a person you have to think, βWill she tell me the truth?β When we met for a few hours in Michigan before we started, we agreed we wanted to bring some daring ideas and some freshness to this album.β
βI said to Phil,β joked Anne, βThe only reason I asked you was that Iβm the only singer left that you havenβt worked with!β
βIβve done duets throughout my career,β Anne says. βI did duets when I started out on (CBC Televisionβs) βSingalong Jubilee.β I did a duets album in 1971 with Glen Campbell. Growing up I did lot of group singing at school and sang with my brothers. Iβve always loved singing harmony.β
Since releasing her debut album in 1967, Anne Murray has been honored with a spectacular number of awards. She is the proud recipient of four Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, three Country Music Association Awards, three Canadian Country Music Association Awards and twenty-four Juno Awards. Bidin' My Time
Anne Murray Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
"Cause that's the kind of guy I'm,
Beginnin' on a Monday,
Right through Sunday,
Bidin' my time.
Give me, give me,
Glass that's bright and twinkles,
Let me, let me,
He's bided his time,
Like that Winkle guy,
I'm chasin' 'way flies,
How the day flies,
Bidin' my time.
I'm bidin' my time,
"Cause that's the kind of guy I'm,
Beginnin' on a Monday,
Right through Sunday,
Bidin' my time.
Give me, give me,
Glass that's bright and twinkles,
Let me, let me,
Dream like Rip Van Winkle.
He's bided his time,
Like that Winkle guy,
I'm chasin' 'way flies,
How the day flies,
Bidin' my time.
The lyrics of Anne Murray's "Bidin' My Time" present the perspective of a character who is taking life easy and waiting for the right time to act. The singer describes himself as a guy who is always biding his time, from Monday to Sunday, and enjoying his leisure moments by drinking and dreaming. The comparison with Rip Van Winkle, a fictional character known for his long sleep, reinforces the idea that the singer of the song is not in a rush or worried about the passage of time. As the singer repeats the lines "Give me, give me, glass that's bright and twinkles", he expresses his desire for a carefree life with no responsibilities or worries.
The other line that stands out in the song is "I'm chasin' 'way flies, how the day flies, bidin' my time." Here, the singer talks about how he spends his time chasing flies and killing time, without any sense of urgency. He sounds content with his life as it is, without needing to aim for anything more. The song has a laid-back, folksy vibe that reinforces the message of being in no hurry and enjoying the present moment.

My mum's favourite song ... I'll always connect this song with her ... and yes, it was the flip-side of Snowbird. I'm almost 64 now, yet when I hear this song, I remember being about 11 going through to a teenager when she'd sing this at the top of her lungs! Love you mama, happy mother's day! Boy. ;) x
