Hope There's Someone
Antony The Johnsons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, will I go?
Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold, when I'm tired

There's a ghost on the horizon (there's a ghost, there's a ghost)
When I, go to bed
How can I fall asleep at night? (How can I? How can I? How can I?)
How will I rest my head?

Oh, I'm scared of the middle place
Between light and nowhere
I don't want to be the one
Left in there, left in there

There's a man on the horizon (there's a man, there's a man, there's a man)
Wish that I'd go to bed
If I fall to his feet tonight (if I fall, if I fall, if I fall)
Will I rest my head?

So here's hoping I will not drown
Or paralyze in light
And godsend I don't want to go
To the seal's watershed

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, will I go?

Hope that someone

Will set my heart free
Nice to hold, when I'm tired

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Antony The Johnsons's song "Hope there's someone" express feelings of fear and loneliness associated with mortality, and the hope for someone to care for us beyond death. The singer gestures towards an afterlife, pondering who will take care of him and set his heart free after he dies. This desire for a guardian who can alleviate the unease that comes with mortality can be seen in the chorus, where the lyrics repeat the lines, "Hope there's someone who'll take care of me / When I die, will I go / Hope there's someone who'll set my heart free / Nice to hold, when I'm tired."

The ghost on the horizon may represent the fear of death, haunting the singer as they try to sleep. The man on the horizon could symbolize the afterlife, and the fear of what may happen in that realm. The lines, "I don't want to be the one / left in there, left in there" suggest that the singer is afraid of being alone or stranded in a place between life and death, neither here nor there.

The fear of drowning or becoming paralyzed in the light could portray the fear of reaching the end of life or experiencing death. The seal's watershed is a metaphor for death as well, which the singer does not want to go to. The song ultimately expresses a desire for connection beyond the limits of mortality and the hope for someone to take care of us beyond death.

One of the worlds best voices. Criminally underrated.

Are you serious? I can barely understand what she is singing, one or two words here and there and that's it. That's not a good singer. OK, she has a good tone, nice vibrato but her enunciation utterly sucks. Why write lyrics at all if you are going to mumble sing?

@LukeTaylorOfficial

@@ellendonahue556 I said one of the best “voices”, not singers. Two very different things.

@franjaureguim

Luke… they’d never understand…. It’s Not underrated. Kept safe instead. Let’s keep her in secret. So she’ll be safe. 🌙
