Vocalist Aidan Moffat and multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Middleton met in Falkirk, bonded over their mutual love for Drag City recording artists such as Smog and Will Oldham, and began a collaboration in 1995. The band is completed by violinist Jenny Reeve and cellist Stacey Sievewright. Arab Strap's marked characteristics include frank and forthright lyrics delivered in a Scottish brogue.
Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton confirmed the rumours about the end of Arab Strap on 8th September 2006. They celebrated their Ten Years of Tears with a tour through the UK and the rest of Europe. After UK/Europe, they made a short secret tour in Japan as the last of Arab Strap. In 2016, however, they have reunited a decade after their breakup and will be touring throughout the year 2017.

The lyrics to Arab Strap's song One Day After School tell a story about a teenage boy who is infatuated with a girl who he believes is his girlfriend. He talks about how he thought he was protecting her from harm but then she stabs herself in the arm with a fork. He then reveals that they used to engage in sexual activities but she would tell her friends that he beats her up. Despite all of this, she gives him a cool steel ladybird thing and tells him that there is no future for them. He becomes upset and cries on the bus when she breaks up with him.
He tries to talk to her but she refuses to answer the door and the police come to tell him to leave. He eventually gives her another chance but catches her with someone else and pulls them apart. The other guy tries to fight him to impress the girl but he ends up going home crying and bleeding. His mom threatens to go to the girl's house and choke her.

So I went round and banged on the door, I thought I had so much to say. And then the pigs came and told me to be on my way.
I tried to talk to her but the police showed up and told me to leave.
It'd be nice to say, then, that that's where the story ends, But she came way with some pish about still being friends.
It would be good if I could end the story there, but she wanted to remain friends.
And she seemed sincere so I thought I'd give her a chance. And it was okay until I found her with her hand down someone else's pants.
I trusted her and things were going okay until I caught her cheating on me.
I pulled them apart, it was all I could think to do. Then another guy she knew flew to her rescue.
I physically intervened and another man came to her defense.
He tried to kick my head in to impress her 'cause he was trying to poke her. I came home greeting and bleeding And my mum threatened to go round to her house and choke her.
The other guy tried to hurt me to impress her, leaving me injured and crying. My mom threatened to confront her for hurting me.
