If I am not mistaken, both this and Aretha's better known Christmas recording of "Winter Wonderland" were recorded during her time on Columbia Records. Although she had no significant hits during this period, her voice was at its most pristine during that time. At Atlantic, Aretha would sometimes record hoarse (as heard on her biggest hit, "Respect"), and no doubt years of cigarette smoking had already began to lend a huskiness to her voice. By the time she started on Arista in 1980, her voice had suffered permanent damage and had began to settle into the somewhat perforated sound that became characteristic of the latter years of her career.
