Arie India Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sometimes I comb my hair and sometimes I won't
Depend of how the wind blows I might even paint my toes
It really just depends on whatever feels good in my soul
I'm not the average girl from your video
And I ain't built like a supermodel
But I learned to love myself unconditionally
I not the average girl from your video
My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes
No matter what I'm wearing I will always be
India.Arie
When I look in the mirror and the only one there is me
Every freckle on my face is where it's suppose to be
And I know my creator didn't make no mistakes on me
My feet, my thighs, my lips, my eyes, I'm loving what I see
I'm not the average girl from your video
And I ain't built like a supermodel
But I learned to love myself unconditionally
Because I am a queen
I not the average girl from your video
My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes
No matter what I'm wearing I will always be
India.Arie
Am I less of a lady if I don't wear panty hose
My momma said a lady ain't what she wears but what she knowsรข?ยฆ
But I've drawn the conclusion, it's all an illusion
Confusion's the name of the game
A misconception, a mass deception,
Something gotta change
Now don't be offended this is all my opinion
Ain't nothing that I'm saying law
This is a true confession
Of a life learned lesson
I was sent here to share with y'all
So get in when you fit in
Go on and shine
Clear your mind
Now's the time
Put your salt on the shelf
Go on and love yourself
Cause everything's gonna be alright
I'm not the average girl from your video
And I ain't built like a supermodel
But I learned to love myself unconditionally
Because I am a queen
I not the average girl from your video
My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes
No matter what I'm wearing I will always be
India.Arie
Keep your fancy drink, and your expensive minks
I don't need that to have a good time
Keep your expensive cars and your caviar
All I need is my guitar
Keep your crystal and your pistol
I'd rather have a pretty piece of crystal
Don't need you silicone, I prefer my own
What god gave me is just fine
I'm not the average girl from your video
And I ain't built like a supermodel
But I learned to love myself unconditionally
Because I am a queen
I not the average girl from your video
My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes
No matter what I'm wearing I will always be
India.Arie
In "Video," India.Arie urges listeners to reject societal pressures to conform to traditional beauty standards. She reveals that she is not the "average girl" featured in music videos and fashion magazines. She doesn't always shave her legs or wear make-up. However, she doesn't allow these deviations to affect her sense of self-worth. India.Arie describes her physical appearance as a result of divine design rather than aesthetics determined by the likes of society. She shares that her worth is not related to her clothes' prices and encourages others to embrace themselves unapologetically.

She was too real for the music industry.

agree with everything said

But...when this song was released, she was signed to UMG, the biggest record label in the music industry. She got so much support that she started her own label, Songbird, in partnership with Universal Republic Record, a division under UMG. UMG is a business that operates on supply/demand principles. The real question is: why aren't more people supporting her? THAT has nothing to do with the industry and everything to do with the general public/audience.

***** Brainwashed? In what way? Nobody is holding a gun to my head and forcing me to listen to anything. As a consumer with internet access, I have more choices than ever. I can choose which artist to discover on Soundcloud, which artist to stream on Spotify, which artist's album/merch/tour tickets to buy online. The supply is definitely there. And like I said, even India Arie continues to make music with the support of the largest record label in the world. So, it has nothing to do with the industry desires and everything to do with the complacency of an audience that doesn't think for itself or actively support great artists.

***** There is a lot of trash on TV and on the internet. However, no one is going to bubble wrap and child-proof the world for little kids. It is solely the responsibility of the parents to be vigilant and to pay attention to what their kids are consuming. It's certainly not easy in 2016 with so much out there, but it is still a parent's responsibility and no one else's. Again, I have to ask: why aren't these parents taking responsibility for their children? Everyone has a choice. Nobody is forced to consume anything they don't want to.
