The Blood is On Our Hands
Arm the Poor Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Do Not Disturb
And the screams of the victims
Grow louder but unheard
They'll wave their flags and they'll claim
America was saved
As the last of the innocent
Are tucked deep in their graves
Set a course for action
The main attraction
Global Distraction
Saw the ghost of sympathy
And shot him in the head
All hail Caesar
The blood is on our hands
Does money matter more
Than morals and progression
Is there a point of war
Besides profits and elections
As they cover body bags
With disgraced American flags
They'll be planning another attack
Oh god it's another Iraq
The lyrics of Arm the Poor's song "Blood on Our Hands" paint a bleak picture of the state of affairs in America, with a focus on the nation's indifference to the suffering of others. The opening lines depict a scenario where the door to America is closed off, marked with a "Do Not Disturb" sign, and the cries of victims go unnoticed and ignored. This imagery sets the tone for a narrative of neglect and ignorance towards the plight of those who are unseen and unheard.
The song highlights the hypocrisy of those in power who wave flags and claim that America has been saved while innocent lives are being lost and buried without a second thought. The lyric "So goodbye compassion, Set a course for action, The main attraction, Global Distraction" suggests a cynical perspective on how international policies are driven more by self-interest and power plays rather than genuine empathy or concern for humanity. The references to Caesar and blood on our hands evoke imagery of historical empires built on violence and exploitation.
The lyrics question the priorities of a society where money seems to trump morals and progress, and where war appears to serve the interests of profit and political gain rather than noble causes. The lines "As they cover body bags, With disgraced American flags, They'll be planning another attack, Oh god it's another Iraq" point to a cycle of violence and imperialism that repeats itself, with little regard for the lives lost and the consequences of such actions. The repetition of history and the constant pursuit of power at the expense of human lives are themes that run through the song's verses.
In essence, "Blood on Our Hands" serves as a poignant critique of the state of American politics and foreign policy, calling attention to the moral bankruptcy and callousness of those in charge. The imagery of bloodshed, manipulation, and disregard for the value of human life serves as a powerful reminder of the cost of greed and the need for a shift towards compassion and accountability in decision-making. The song urges listeners to reflect on the consequences of their actions and to question the narratives pushed by those in power, challenging them to strive for a more just and compassionate world.
