crying in the rain
Art Garfunkel feat. James Taylor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll never let you see
The way my broken heart is hurting me
I've got my pride and I know how to hide
All the sorrow and pain
I'll do my crying in the rain

If I wait for cloudy skies
You won't know the rain from the tears in my eyes
You'll never know that I still love you
So though the heartaches remain
I'll do my crying in the rain

Raindrops falling from heaven
Will never wash away my misery
But since we're not together
I'll wait for stormy weather
To hide these tears I hope you'll never see

Someday when my crying's done
I'm gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun
I may be a fool
But till then, darling, you'll never see me complain
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain

I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Art Garfunkel and James Taylor's song "Crying in the Rain" convey the pain and heartbreak the singer feels after a breakup. The first lines express the singer's determination to conceal their heartbreak and distress from the person who caused it, as they don't want to appear weak or vulnerable. The lyrics suggest that the singer will put on a facade of strength and happiness, even though they're hurting inside. The phrase "I'll do my crying in the rain" is a metaphor for hiding one's tears and sadness from others by crying when it's raining, so no one can tell they're crying.

The next verse describes the singer's hope that the person they love will not recognize that they're still in love with them. The line "If I wait for cloudy skies, you won't know the rain from the tears in my eyes" shows that the singer worries that their emotions will become apparent if they're seen crying. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the singer's desire to keep their heartbreak from the person they still love. They'll wait for stormy weather to cry, to make sure no one is around to witness their pain.

The final verse offers a glimmer of hope for the future. The singer talks about looking forward to a time when their heartbreak will have healed, and they'll be able to smile again. They acknowledge that they might look like a fool for holding onto hope, but they don't want to complain. Despite their sadness, they're determined to keep moving forward and put on a brave face.

Overall, the lyrics to "Crying in the Rain" explore the complicated emotions of heartbreak and the difficulties in expressing these feelings to the person who caused them. The metaphor of crying in the rain and waiting for stormy weather to conceal emotions highlights the singer's desire for privacy and the need to process their pain in their own way.

Oh my goodness! I love this!
James, I met you in 1967 at McCormick Place in Chicago. I interrupted your dinner with your band. I apologize profusely. I was a silly 21-year-old, so excited to meet you, and you were such a gentleman! I still have the autograph you gave me. I treasure it. I keep it inside the book you wrote. . .your autobiography.

About 23 years later I met Phil and Don Everly in Nashville, Indiana. I had been their fan since I was 13-years-old. They were very nice too. I was crushed when Phil died. He had talked to me a long time after their concert.

Yes, I’ve had a charmed life.

Thank you both for singing this amazingly beautiful, harmonic song. I’ll share it. ❤️

Are you sure it was 1967 you met James Taylor? He didn’t become famous until 1970 so would you have known who he was in 1967?

@onefoot7

So, he was 18-19 years old and didn't even meet Peter Asher yet????, why would you care

Where has this piece been hiding? We weren’t ready before, but It was meant for a time as this. It was meant for healing. Thanks for sharing this, James, rather than let it slip away. Music and time are great healers.

I'll do my crying in the rain, too. Such a beautiful song that makes me cry for all the 11S victims. Never forget them. RIP. Best regards from Spain, James.
