My Baby Just Cares For Me
Art Jarrett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My baby don't care for shows
My baby don't care for clothes
My baby just cares for me

My baby don't care for
Cars and races
My baby don't care for
High-toned places

Liz Taylor is not his style
And even Lana Turner's smile
Is something he can't see

My baby don't care who knows it
My baby just cares for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Art Jarrett's song "My Baby Just Cares for Me" express the simple but profound truth that often, in a relationship, it's the little things that matter most. The song is a celebration of the enduring power of love and the fact that it doesn't need to be flashy or flamboyant to be real. The singer of the song is expressing his wonder and gratitude that, despite all the distractions of modern life, his partner cares only for him.

The first verse establishes this theme by stating that the singer's partner doesn't care about material things such as clothes or expensive shows but instead values their relationship above all else. This sentiment is further expressed in the second verse, where it's revealed that the partner is not drawn to flashy cars or high-end establishments. Instead, the singer's partner is content with simple pleasures and is not swayed by the superficiality of Hollywood stars such as Elizabeth Taylor or Lana Turner.

The final lines of the song express the singer's joy that his partner doesn't care who knows about their love, as they are happy just being together. This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the essence of the song: that love is not about flashy displays, but about the deep connection between two people who are content in each other's company.

I don't know why. I can play this over and over, and never get tired of it.

The Weems band have several pretty good vocalists, all of whom were instrumentalists too. Art Jarrett was the banjo player and Parker Gibbs, one of the reed men was pretty good too. Later on, Country Washburne, the brass bass player, was roped in as a voclaist as was drummer Dusty Roads/Rhodes. The latter is shown in the recording files as Roads probably in error.
