Move It On Over
Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith & His Cracker-Jacks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our lips shouldn't touch
(Move over darling)
I like it too much
(Move over darling)
That gleam in your eyes
is no big surprise anymore
'Cause you fooled me before
I'm all in a spin
(Move over darling)
About to give in
(Move over darling)
And though it's not right
I'm too weak to fight it somehow
'Cause I want you right now

The way you sigh
has me waving my conscience bye bye
You can call me a fickle thing
But I'm practically yours forever, because

(I yearn to be kissed)
Move over darling
(How can I resist)
Move over darling
You captured my heart
and now that I'm no longer free
Make love to me

The way you sigh
Has me waving my conscience good bye
You can call me a fickle thing
But I'm practically yours forever, because

I yearn to be kissed
(Move over darling)
How can I resist
(Move over darling)
Please give me your love
I'm longing for you
I need all your love, honest I do
You captured my heart
and now that I'm no longer free

Make love to me
(Move over darling)
Make love to me
(Move over darling)
Make love to me
(Move over darling)

Make love to me
(Move over darling)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith & His Cracker-Jacks's song "Move It On Over" depict a tale of forbidden desire and inner conflict. The singer acknowledges the allure of their romantic interest, expressed through the repeated plea to "Move over darling." The opening lines emphasize the forbidden nature of their relationship, with the singer recognizing that their lips should not touch as a result of the intensity of their feelings. Despite knowing that the connection is not appropriate, the singer admits to liking it too much, hinting at a sense of longing and passion that cannot be ignored.

As the song progresses, the singer finds themselves entangled in a web of emotions, feeling weak and unable to resist the pull of their desire. The imagery of being in a spin and on the verge of giving in suggests a struggle between rationality and overwhelming emotions. The repetition of "Move over darling" throughout the song serves as a refrain that highlights the internal conflict and the yearning for connection despite the perceived wrongness of it.

The lyrics also delve into the intensity of the physical and emotional connection between the singer and their romantic interest. The mention of the gleam in their eyes, the sighs that lead to waving conscience goodbye, and the yearning to be kissed all point to a deep and passionate longing for intimacy and closeness. Despite the moral implications and the singer's acknowledgment of their fickle nature, they express a desire to be fully consumed by their feelings and surrender to the love they have found.

Ultimately, the song's plea for the object of affection to make love to the singer reveals a sense of desperation and longing for fulfillment. The repeated requests to "Make love to me" convey a sense of urgency and a craving for a deeper connection that transcends societal norms and restrictions. The internal struggle between what is right and what is desired is palpable throughout the lyrics, painting a vivid picture of a love that defies logical reasoning and societal expectations.

Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful compilation you compiled Silvan!

I'm actually familiar with about more than a quarter of those listed in your vid. But %70 I'm not, and I thank you!

Kinda bums me out, 'cause I would just truly love to be familiar with each and every great artist of the 30, 40, and 50's era(although I know that is an impossibility).

But it just goes to show, there is such a vast amount of spectacular artists of these times which are widely unknown, but have such impeccable musical talent! They just didn't have the means to push and get their music out to the world. Thankfully they were recorded and archived by music admirers. Can you image all the gems which were completely lost through the elements of time? 😔

One of my main dreams on my bucket list, is to find a Wurlitzer Jukebox, hopefully in functioning condition, and stockpile it with nothing but vinyl music of such. I don't care if I'm at the end of my days if, and when I come across one. I'm gettin' it!

From one classic music enthusiasts to obviously another...thank you immensely for your fantastic post of an amazing compilation!✌😎

Jimi Hendrix Still is White folks making music a like Led Zeppelin "Greta Van Fleet sound exactly the same". It's not the 1970's anymore but sounds a bit different of course it will as it sounded different in the 1930's

Individuals like Joe Satriani still releasing great albums, Jeff Beck. Keeping Rock'n roll alive. In fact all the black artists are now lost to the mainstream hip-hop and r&b scene and there was nothing wrong with those two genres before the 2010's.

Alter Bridge is most certainly a modern band that has a lot of Blues, Jazz in them thanks to the Singer/Rhythm guitarist Myles Kennedy, and lead guitarist Chris Tremonti really both of them are taking Rock N Roll to the next level vocally and instrumentally. If you ain't convinced this band have music knowledge search Myles Kennedy's rendition of Robert Johnson's (Travelling Riverside Blues).

They're massive in Europe and tour constantly around the world. It seems Rock Music was in the major spotlight between 1955-1995 when the radio corporations started changing it to boy bands and this dancing, no instrument playing nonsense.

I won't discuss other genres of music in detail as it is inappropriate in this discussion about Rock n Roll.

Not enough people know about Alter Bridge I guess they don't promote themselves that well and just rely on creating good music to obtain a fan base. Check them out you won't be disappointed.

God Bless Sister Rosetta (playing rock & roll on that guitar in 1938 - well over a decade before what most would consider the birth of R&R!!) and God Bless YOU for compiling this awesome list! I will definitely pass this along to my 4th & 5th grade students (public school music teacher). Thanks!!

Rock and roll was invented in about 1946. It was a new kind of jump blues that poked fun at religious people, such as Rosetta (who wouldn't perform secular music at all at the time), by combining jump blues style with gospel style, such as the heavy backbeat that was closely associated with gospel, and singing about "rocking" meaning partying and sex rather than the bosom of Abraham etc. The references to "deacons," "good news," etc. in the lyrics were to make sure black kids got the rebelling-against-their-parents joke.

If that recording is indeed from 1938, it is pure rock and roll - and nothing else but!

Kristin Markiton God bless Aileen Stanley who sang as an angel

The Brazilian Atlantis

@Bob Aldo Nope, it's gospel.

In the early 50's I was raised on big band and swing ( taught to dance by my grandmother ). But grandpa had a record collection out in the garage that my siblings and myself thought were much more interesting. Thanks for opening my memory and bringing those times and these songs back to our lives.

What was the 50s like?

I love rock and roll! These songs convince me that its roots are as deep as those of jazz. It's the music of America's young heart. It's so strong and optimistic. It's put it's mark on the history of the world as much as any other art form, and more than most. ROCK ON!

Jazz started in around 1900 or 1905, rock and roll in around 1946 or 1947.
