Highwayman
Ashley Campbell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost their baubles to my trade
Many soldiers shed his life blood on my blade
They finally hung me in the spring of '25
But I am still alive
I was a sailor
And I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide
I sailed a schooner 'round the horn to Mexico
I went aloft to furl the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off, they say that I got killed
But I'm living still

And i was a dam builder
Across the rivers deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around, I guess i'll always be around and around...

I'll fly a starship
Across the universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain

But I will remain
And I'll be back again and again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ashley Campbell's song "Highwayman" showcase the idea of reincarnation and living on through different forms. The first verse describes the singer's life as a highwayman, a person who robbed travelers on coach roads. The violent imagery of the sword and pistol and the mention of soldiers who have died at the singer's hand highlight the dangers of this illicit profession. The second and third verses portray the singer's life as a sailor and a dam builder, respectively, with each one ending in their death but also their continued presence in the world. The final verse speaks of flying a starship across the universe and finding a place to rest the spirit, leaving open the possibility of future lives as a highwayman or as a drop of rain.
