I WONDER
Asleep At The Wheel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's so hard to realize we're through
When we quit, you said you'd always love me
Now I wonder if you feel the way I do
I'll never forget our days together
Even though I know they're very few
I loved you then and will forever
Yeah it's the same thing
Fiddle man, fiddle
It's the strangest and the sweetest love, dear
That two people ever knew
You told me that I need not worry
That forever you'd be true
Through this dreary world, alone, I wander
My thoughts will always be with you
But it seems to me, there's no use living
And I wonder if you feel the way I do
In "I Wonder," Asleep At The Wheel recounts a breakup that occurred eight weeks prior to the song's release. The lyrics attempt to reconcile the singer's lingering feelings of love for their former partner with the reality of their breakup. They recall the promise of perpetual love exchanged at the end of the relationship and wonder if their partner is experiencing parallel emotions. The lyrics express grief and uncertainty from a vulnerable perspective, illustrating the weight and confusion that accompanies heartbreak.
Overall, "I Wonder" can be analyzed as a classic country song that touches on key themes of heartache and love lost. The lyrics are relatively simple and straightforward, but the emotions conveyed are profound and relatable. The fiddle solo that interrupts the song's flow highlights the role that musical accompaniment plays in conveying emotion and adding depth to lyrical content.
