1) Astral … Read Full Bio ↴The name Astral may refer to one of four bands or one DJ:
1) Astral is a dream pop group from San Francisco, California. Astral was formed by singer-guitarist Dave Han and drummer Shawn Poh in 1999; bassist Amy Rosenoff joined them in 2001. Their vocals are frequently compared to those of The Cure; other influences include My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, and Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. Their music is of an ethereal, melodic nature; this ambient sound is created largely by heavy use of distortion and feedback effects in Han's guitar. Poh's drumming could best be described as post-punk; Rosenoff's bass is highly audible. Astral released an LP, entitled "Orchids", in 2003. Two songs from that album, "Raining Down" and the title-track instrumental, were preloaded in the Rio Carbon MP3 Players.
2) Introduced to the world of electronic music in the 90's through the music of Orbital, the Orb and Prodigy. Astral’s interests in dance music breeds his desire to learn the art of mixing…
Citing Shiloh, Luke Chable, Hybrid, Benz & MD & Nubreed as his influence, Astral’s style spells ‘Progressive & Melodic’. During 2002’s much talked about Heineken THIRST competition (headlined by superstar DJ Paul Oakenfold), Astral emerged as one of the top 8 finalists in Singapore – mesmerizing the dancefloor with his signature style of lush melodies & uplifting beats.
Driven by his passion for dance music, Astral hopes to be involved in production in the near future.
3) Astral is also a techno metal band formed by keyboardist Vlada Astral and guitarist Charlie Rock. The current lineup consists of two more members - James Malone (guitars, vocals) and Ritchie Hutson (drums/percussion).
4) Astral is also a symphonic black metal from Český Těšín (Czech Republic). They were formed in 1996 by vocalist Maestro and guitarist Sammael.
5) Progressive Instrumental band featuring Kris Villines (ex Dorcia guitarist). Astral started as a side project in 2006 and, as of January of 2010, is Kris Villines' full time music project.
6) Pre Gnaw Their Tongues project. Mories created two demos under this name: "We the Unclean Shall Flourish" (1993) and "The Celestial Nightmare" (1994). These demos were not released at the time but are have now been made available by Mories for free download at the Gnaw Their Tongues Bandcamp site:

Astral Lyrics

I forebode a sense of doom
The crazies are right
The end is near
Never been a prettier face
In this town, this wretched place
Wondering what she's doing here
Forget about their hearts
For this new witch
Will tear their worlds apart
Eyes of Fire
Eyes of Fire
Eyes of Fire
Eyes of Fire
I am just a regular man
But of this I understand
Of this world she is not from
Her eyes cut like a knife
Tear apart a man's life
And she'll laugh as he comes undone
Husbands and their lovers
Forget about their hearts
This new femme fatale
Will tear their worlds apart
Eyes of Fire
Eyes of Fire
Eyes of Fire
Eyes of Fire
I won't look into
The window that you
Opened with your spell
To you love's a game
If it's just the same
I won't go to Hell
Eyes of Fire
Eyes of Fire
Eyes of Fire
Eyes of Fire
Eyes of Fire
The lyrics to Astral's song 'Eye To Eye' speak of a mysterious woman who enters a room and immediately creates an atmosphere of foreboding and doom. Despite her beauty, the singer senses that she is not from this world and her eyes hold a dangerous power. The song warns of the dangers of falling under her spell, particularly for husbands and their lovers, who may have their lives torn apart by this femme fatale. The repeated refrain of 'Eyes of Fire' reinforces the idea that her gaze is dangerous and that those who engage with her risk being consumed by her.

Exactly 20 years ago, specifically on 10.10.2002, the label Hommega Records released what would become one of the most important and recognized albums in the history of psytrance. Astrix (Avi Shamailov) then 21 years old, releases her first studio album "Eye To Eye".
Years before, Astrix had already produced some tracks in the Nitzhonot genre. It was really discovered when he collaborated with Alien Project on the Midnight Sun album released in 2001.
In his first major work "Eye to Eye", Astrix presents his precocious talent, already showing that he had an above average skill in relation to the productions of other Israeli projects.
Eye To Eye represents all the effervescence of Full On, a genre that was on the rise since 1998 being worked on by the most varied artists. Elements and traces of the old and discontinued Goa Trance are also present on the album. Considered by many fans and DJ's as the best album (I personally still prefer the other three), it is perhaps the most introspective and psychedelic.
Was Eye to Eye something revolutionary for psytrance? Not really, as already mentioned above, tracks of the same style were being produced in droves by various projects. What Astrix did was to masterfully condense all the essence of Full On at the time, into a compilation with extremely original productions, surpassing what had already been produced until then! After all, it's hard to name any previous psytrance album or compilation that was as good and well done as "Eye to Eye". The genius appears to the world!
Since then, Eye to Eye has become a reference, and serves as an inspiration for future productions throughout the scene. From this CD and for the following years, Astrix would already assume the position of best and main psytrance artist in the world, never to leave there.
After 20 years, with all the changes, technological evolutions and the whole process of creating new genres and sub-genres, can listening to the tracks of “Eye to Eye” be something outdated? For some.....maybe. I prefer to see it as a timeless work! Something to be known and appreciated by all generations of psytrance enthusiasts and lovers. Something to remember for many, many decades.
We return in 2024 to remember 20 years of his second album....Artcore.
