And Roses and Roses
Astrud Gilberto Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everyday he sent a little present
Just to let me know how very much he cared
Wrote a little love note with each present
But to fall in love had me a little scared

My poor worried heart was almost certain
Shall I fall or shall I let it be?
Then he sent a dozen yellow roses and
That somehow just turned the trick for me

Roses, roses, roses
I thank all the roses that bloom in the spring
Love is a wonderful thing
The rest of my life, it will bring me
Roses and roses and roses of love

Love is a wonderful thing
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Roses, roses, roses
I thank you for saying what we couldn't say
Oh, what a wonderful way

To tell me he loves me each day
With roses and roses and roses of love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Astrud Gilberto's song And Roses and Roses tell the story of falling in love. At the beginning of the song, the singer receives daily presents from a man who cares deeply about her. She is initially hesitant to fall in love, but with each little love note and present, her heart begins to soften. The turning point in her decision to fall in love comes when the man sends her a dozen yellow roses. These roses seem to have had some kind of magical effect on her, and she realizes that she has indeed fallen in love.

The song is a classic tale of falling in love and accepting romantic gestures as love. The simple lyrics convey the innocence and joy of falling in love with someone who cares deeply about you. It also highlights the importance of little gestures of affection and the impact they can have to win someone's heart over.

In fact, this song was written only by Dorival Caymmi in 1964 when of a stay in Portugal. American lyricist Ray Gilbert translated Caymmi's lyrics "Das Rosas" into English in 1965, and it was released in the United States as "...and Roses and Roses." The song was recorded by Brazilian vocalist Astrud Gilberto and by American singers Andy Williams and Perry Como.
