@Pedro Cavalcante 5 "Coalition Wars" (World Wars) were declared upon France during Napoleon's higher up military career and, later, time as Emperor. Napoleon's rise to fame started during the French Revolution. King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette had been arrested after the Bourbon Dynasty fell from power. The Austrians and Prussians threatened war if anything happened to the King and Queen in captivity. The other Monarchies did not want this revolution of "Independence" spreading, they wanted to stay on their thrones. The new French Government responded to this aggression by declaring war on Austria in 1792, then the Prussians declared war and invaded France. However, the War didn't bode well for Prussia nor Austria and France took some lands in Germany and Italy. After this success, the French Queen and King were executed, and Spain, Naples, the Netherlands, Britain and Portugal declared war upon France in response. This became the war of the "First Coalition" against France. However, the French Republic kept winning battles on all fronts. and in 1795, Prussia sued for peace. During all this, the British helping to spread dissent in Paris. They were trying to assist in overthrowing the French Republc. BUT - the Garrison in Paris was led by young Napoleon Bonaparte who stopped the insurgency in Paris and restored order "with a whiff of grapeshot". He then helped install a new Government, "The Directory." Boneparte then campagined in Italy and won victories over Sardinian and Austrian Allies at Rivoli in 1797. Napoleon then took control over Sardinian Northern Italy. Austria then had to sue for peace and gave Belgium, and the Rhineland to France. Napoleon returned to Paris a hero. However, the dynasties in Europe and Russia would not recognize the new territories gained and continued to declare war on France with 4 more Coalitions. Napoleon was a strategic genius and repeated staggering victories in Europe, Africa, and Russia. Napoleon campaigned to keep his territories and eventually, his throne. Napoleon was Crowned Emperor on December 2nd, 1804.

Imagine being Austria during this time. You come into this battle as a huge empire, have another big empire fighting at your side, seem to have the French retreating...only to lose it ALL in one day. I can only imagine the bitter tears those officials shed when they signed the peace documents with Napoleon soon after. It's literally mindboggling to think about.

@Joseph C. The Old Guard didn't actually attack Wellington, they were held in reserve, though part were on the right fighting the Prussians. Napoleon had to hold back 1/3 of his army to face the Prussians he knew were coming, so he never had a numerical advantage.

@Otto von Bismarck The Old Guard spent most of the battle driving the Prussians out of Plancenoit, who were there for hours, not just the end of the battle. Part of the Old Guard did form a defensive line in reserve while the Middle Guard attacked Wellington's center but they never actually participated in the attack.

Napoleon was 5 feet 7 inches. Now I know you are saying “well that is still pretty short”. That is true by modern day standards in certain places in the world, such as the United States. However, at the time in France, the average height for an adult male was about 5 feet 5 inches. So in fact, he was quite tall for his day.

Also, its not hard to believe that the Art of War, written by 200 BCE, made its way to Europe by the 1750s and had a French translation. (Supposedly it was translated to French in 1782)
In addition, Napoleon was a master at taking others' theories and ideas, improving them, and putting them to practice. Nearly all of Napoleon's tactics and strategies were already established by his contemporaries, he simply took them, perfected them, and put them into practice with each other.

I think Austerlitz battle embodies the best qualities of who Napoleon was, and why his marshals and troops loved him so much. He was caring and loving, yet ruthless and calculating. The balls on this man to trust that his right flank would hold against the superior attack long enough for his army to sweep around and cut off the coalition forces...just implacable.

Heading to your enemy, then retreating so your enemy fall in this "trap", with that another division comes in and surrounds the enemy. With this your side is on both side of the enemy, then with that, the enemy is surrounded on BOTH sides. A perfect double prong attack.

Yes, the summer heat and diseases killed most of his army while the scorched-earth policy combined with Russia’s bad roads made French advance slower, starved his soldiers and left them exhausted. Moreover, as Napoleon advanced deeper into Russia, he kept exposing his flanks while diverting troops to hold garrisons and supply transports. I’m not discrediting the ferocity and achievements of the Russian people but Napoleon’s defeat was mainly due to Russia’s geography.

Normal flags represent the battalion, or regiment. For example, every British regiment, I don't remember on which level they issued them, had a set of flags - One Kings Colour, with the union jack and regiments number, and one regimental colour, with regimental colour field and number. You lose the regimental colours you dishonour the regiment, you lose the Kings Colour you dishonour none but King George himself.
I think most nations had only one per battalion, which just represented the regiment itself, for example France. yes, he had many great battles....even after the Russian disaster, he was able to open the campaign of 1813 with a stunning victory over the allies at the Battle of Dresden....he then ordered a march to Berlin to retake the Prussian Capital, but his marshalls dissented and demanded they retreat to the safety of France and defend the country, rather than go on the offenseive,,,,and in the course of this retreat demanded by his marshalls, the French army ran into the entire combined armies of all his enemies, who had joined together after Napoleon won at Dresden....in the ensuing Battle of Nations, the badly outnumbered French held their own for several days, but then ran out of ammunition and were forced to flee back to France in disarray....it was the beginning of the end.

2:30. Davout was shown to be standing with bonaparte. This is historically false. Davout was commanding an army on a force march to support the right flank and only arrived on the battlefield in the afternoon. He cant possible be standing with napoleon before the battle begins.

Prop uniforms aren't cheap to make. I think that they might have decided to make them look similar as a cost cutting move. I'm not certain though.

I was mentioning greatcoat (part of winter uniform-that's what you wear over your uniform to keep you warm). Russian did use black greatcoats in small numbers but otherwise this document has a lot of uniform depiction inaccuracy

Cover and camouflage doesn’t really work when your weapons are so inaccurate the only way you can hit something is by firing in mass. Could you imagine an army trying to use modern tactics with smoothbore muskets? It would be an absolute disaster.
