So both of you ended up defending EDT, even going as far as to bite the bullet on the "Smoking Lesion" problem.
I am very much a one-boxer, but I also believe that EDT is just a non-starter, precisely because of that problem. It's not even that EDT sometimes gets things wrong: it seems to me that its only difference from CDT is on these weird cases, and I think this difference is just a fallacy on EDT's part. A fallacy which coincidentally happens to get Newcomb right. A "slightly modified CDT" solution is much more attractive to me than EDT.

By the way, have you guys read "The Ultimate Newcomb's Problem" by Eliezer Yudkowsky? That thought experiment seems to be written in such a way to convince as many people as possible to two-box (including EDT proponents), while also maintaining that the author's own answer is still to one-box.

The way im understanding this, is that you want to be the kind of person who would pick 1 box. that way the predictor will guess that that's what you will do and put in 1 million.
but, you also want to actually physically pick 2 boxs, since that maximizes your money obtained after the prediction has been made.

unfortunately i don't see a way to be the kind of person who would pick 1 box, while still actually picking 2 boxes.
So, I pick 1 box.

@Friction I don't think this involves preparing? im not sure i understand your point.
If the predictor is good enough, he can predict any thought processes you might have right before making your choice. So even without preparation, you can decide to be a one boxer hoping that he predicted that that's what you would do.

Yeah. The problem is a bit different if you're allowed to prepare, so to speak, for the prediction. I think many two-boxers would grant the reasonableness of trying to convince oneself of one-boxing so that they would likely be predicted to one-box, and presumably would then one-box. However, this is not the standard Newcomb problem, but a special sort of sequential decision problem.

For the "transparent" problem, I think there is a way of correctly restating it, which avoids paradoxes and makes things more clear.
Yes, there are two separate problems: "transparent-full" and "transparent-empty". However, when it is time for the Predictor to fill the boxes, he predicts not what will happen in reality, but what would happen if he were to put a million dollars in there.
In other words, he only considers your counterfactual answer to "transparent-full": if you would have one-boxed, he will actually give you a million, and if you would have two-boxed, he will leave the box empty.

On one hand, if you already see a million dollars, there's nothing preventing you from taking the extra thousand. But on the other hand, if you're the kind of person to do that, then you will never get to experience that scenario in the first place, you'll just get the empty box instead.
Therefore, there is a sort of "conflict of interest" between you-in-the-simulation who has to answer the "transparent-full" question, and you-in-reality who will experience the consequences of that simulated choice. It is a situation similar to "Parfit's Hitchhiker", where the selfish actions of you-in-the-simulation are bad for you-in-reality.
