Can't Take You With Me
Bahamas Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In me there's a new love that has growing
So now I leave behind all that once was mine
I can't take you with me where I'm going
I can't take you with me, that's for certain
Anchored to some heavy red stage curtain
If I should hear you sing
I cant take you with me, that's for certain
I can't take you with me now I know it
Though the love was in me I did not show it
I found in Berlin who I swore might be my twin
Taken from me without me ever knowing
You can't take me with you where you're going
You've got no intentions of ever slowing
My book of baby's names
Only does family flames
I dreamt we had a boy and named him Owen
The lyrics of Bahamas's Can't Take You With Me convey a sense of moving on from a past love and leaving it behind to pursue a new one. The artist speaks directly to his former lover, acknowledging the existence of a new love that has grown within him, but implies that he cannot bring her along with him on this new journey. He references a physical and metaphorical separation, indicating that the past belongs to him alone and cannot be carried forward.
The repetition of the lines, "I can't take you with me where I'm going," and "I can't take you with me, that's for certain," reinforces the finality of the situation, indicating that the decision to move forward and leave the past behind is definite. The artist suggests that the weight of his past love is too heavy to bear, using the simile "anchored to some heavy red stage curtain."
The lyrics explore themes of love, loss, and moving forward, ultimately concluding that the past must be left behind to embrace a new future. The final lines of the song, "You can't take me with you where you're going / You've got no intentions of ever slowing," suggest that the decision to move forward and pursue a new love is mutual and that both parties are parting ways to pursue their own paths.
