The Dream
Barbara & Wilson Lyrics

And the gay crowded places
Trying to forget you
But somehow it seems
My thoughts ever stray
To our last sweet embraces
Over the sea on the island of dreams
High in the sky
Is a bird on the wing
Please carry me with you?
Far, far away
From the mad, rushing crowds
Please carry me with you?
Again I would wander
Where memories enfold me
There on the beautiful island of dreams
High in the sky
Is a bird on the wing
Please carry me with you?
Far, far away
From the mad, rushing crowds
Please carry me with you?
Again I would wander
Where memories enfold me
There on the beautiful island of dreams
Far, far away
On the island of dreams
"The Dream" by Barbara & Wilson captures the longing and nostalgia of a love lost. The singer is wandering the streets and bustling places, trying to forget their past lover, but failing miserably. No matter where they go, their thoughts always drift back to the memories of their last sweet embraces on the island of dreams.
The lyrics convey a sense of desperation and yearning to escape the reality of the present. The singer pleads to a bird soaring high in the sky, asking it to carry them away from the chaotic and overwhelming crowds. They seek solace in the idea of being transported to a faraway place, where they can once again find the peace and happiness they had on the island of dreams.
This song resonates with those who have experienced heartbreak and the desire to escape from the pain. The island of dreams symbolizes a utopian place where love and happiness were once found. It represents a longing for a time when everything felt perfect and secure, and the desire to recreate those moments.

I wander the streets
I am aimlessly moving through the city
And the gay crowded places
In busy and lively areas
Trying to forget you
Attempting to erase memories of you
But somehow it seems
Yet it always appears
My thoughts ever stray
My mind continuously wanders
To our last sweet embraces
To our loving moments together
Over the sea on the island of dreams
In a distant place filled with fantasies
High in the sky
Up in the heavens
Is a bird on the wing
There is a bird flying
Please carry me with you?
May you transport me alongside?
Far, far away
To a great distance
From the mad, rushing crowds
Away from the chaotic, hurried masses
Again I would wander
Once more I desire to roam
Where memories enfold me
Where recollections embrace me
There on the beautiful island of dreams
In that exquisite land of fantasies
Far, far away
To a great distance
On the island of dreams
In the realm of dreams

I have a hard time listening to only a very few artists.. Dennis Wilson is one of them.. His songs are so incredibly moving. Solo John Lennon has that effect on me too. You rarely hear anything like this anymore. People like to tell me that Bono from U2 has that same type of conviction and drive in his songs.. but to me it rings hollow and somewhat phony. Dennis was the real deal !!

And was very much NOT a Beach Boy musically. His musically signature doesn't come anywhere near theirs. Denny's songs were deep, soulful and heartfelt.

I think that John Lennon could have sung this!

You are completely right when saying Dennis Wilson was the musical Steve McQueen!! He had an aura that none of the other Beach Boys had. What is amazing is the depth and conviction he brought to his songs. No one can do breathtaking, heartache, pain and soulful yearning like Dennis. You just don't see that in todays music. Nothing close!

A very touching, tender and loving tribute of devotion expressed from one to another. Be it a wife, a husband, a partner, boyfriend or girlfriend, this song resonates as an honest and uplifting tale of what the sentiment is really about. I even see it as a way a friend can express warmth for another. The bare piano playing and the sparse background feel makes this riveting. Special all the way through. I am glad I discovered this song and it will provide listening comfort for years to come.

Another overlooked, underrated talent who never got the recognition he deserved. Dennis's songs have more heart and soul in them than anything Top 40 radio has produced in years. This is the kind of stuff the music executives don't want us to hear...

Melancholic and yet so full of soul🌟

Dennis was so talented. All three Wilson Brothers were. Each of their musical signatures were so different. But each one had their own genius. Dennis's was deeper, emotional and very obvious. They could have each had their own very successful careers.
I do wish that Dennis has received psych help long before he did. His Dad really screwed him up. But then, his Dad was screwed up, too.
