Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
Opening/You'll Never Know
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You'll never know just how much I care
And if I tried, I still couldn't hide my love for you
You ought to know, for haven't I told you so
A million or more times?
You went away and my heart went with you
I speak your name in my every prayer
I swear I don't know how
You'll never know if you don't know now
(You went away and my heart went with you
I speak your name in my every prayer)
If there is some other way to prove that I love you
I swear I don't know how
You'll never know if you don't know now
You'll never know if you don't know now
Barbra Streisand's song "Opening/You'll Never Know" expresses the pain and heartache of unrequited love. The singer expresses her longing for someone who she deeply cares about and misses. The repeated phrase "You'll never know" emphasizes the pain of not being able to express her love and affection to the person. Despite her efforts to hide her feelings, she cannot help but speak their name in every prayer and think of them constantly. The singer questions if there is any other way to prove her love to the person, but admits she doesn't know how.
The song represents the universal experience of loving someone who will never reciprocate those feelings. The lyrics convey a sense of vulnerability and a deep longing for the person's affection, which many listeners can relate to. The poignant melody and Streisand's powerful vocals add to the emotional impact of the song.
Overall, "Opening/You'll Never Know" is a powerful song about the complexities of love and the pain of unrequited affection.

I remember being 10 years old when the commercials advertising this started. I relentlessly begged my mom to let me watch it on NYE....I didnt even know who Streisand was and my mom exclaimed "you wanna watch Barbra Streisand?!"
Yo, her voice just held me captive
...every..."Timeless"...commercial
and there were alot of promosjust always stopped me in my tracks.I was only ten years old.
And today at 31 her voice still has that same effect on me.
I hear her voice and I just stop.
Captivated. Stunned and Moved...
She really is, timeless.
