Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
Where's That Rainbow
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I'm bubbling over today
Spring brings roses to people you see
But it brings hay fever to me
My luck will vary surely
That's purely a curse
My luck has changed
Yes, it gotten
To worse
Where's that rainbow they sing about
Where's that lining they cheer about
Where's that love nest where love is
King ever after
Where's that blue room they sing about
Where's that sunshine they fling about
I know morning will come but
Pardon my laughter
In each scenario you can depend
On the end where the lovers agree
Where's that Lothario where does he roam
With his dome Vaselined as can be
It is easy to see alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Be just dandy for everybody but me
In each scenario you can depend
On the end where the lovers agree
Where's that Lothario where does he roam
With his dome Vaselined as can be
It is easy to see alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Be just dandy for everybody but me
Oh yeah, I see that rainbow
For everybody
But me
The lyrics to Barbra Streisand's song "Where's That Rainbow" express a sense of frustration and disappointment in the face of others' happiness and joy. The opening lines suggest that while troubles may be temporary and fleeting for some, they seem to persist and multiply for the singer. The mention of hay fever as a springtime affliction further emphasizes this idea of the singer's luck taking a turn for the worse.
The chorus repeatedly asks where the positive elements and experiences that others seem to enjoy can be found. The rainbow, symbolizing hope and positivity, is elusive and seemingly out of reach for the singer. The mention of the love nest and blue room highlights the longing for a place of happiness and sunshine. The singer acknowledges that morning will come, but their laughter is tinged with sarcasm and disbelief. They feel left out and unable to find solace in the optimistic outlook that seems to surround others.
The final lines express a resignation to the fact that everything will be alright for everybody else, but not for the singer. They perceive that others can see the rainbow, but for some reason, it remains elusive to them.
Overall, the song captures a sense of isolation and frustration, as the singer grapples with their own struggles while witnessing others' seemingly effortless happiness.
