Hello again
Barbra Streisand / Neil Diamond Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello, again, hello
Just called to say hello
I couldn't sleep at all tonight
And I know it's late
I couldn't wait

Hello, my friend, hello
Just called to let you know
I think about you every night
When I'm here alone
And you're there at home
Hello

Maybe it's been crazy
And maybe I'm to blame
But I put my heart above my head
We've been through it all and you love me just the same
And when your not there
I just need to hear

Hello, my friend, hello
It's good to need you so
It's good to love you like I do
And I feel this way when I hear you say
Hello

Hello, my friend, hello
Just called to let you know
I think about you every night

And I know it's late but I could't wait
Hello

Overall Meaning

The song 'Hello Again' by Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond is a heartfelt expression of longing and affection between two friends. The song speaks of the act of calling just to say hello, even though it's late into the night. The singer in the song reveals that they are unable to sleep and that they think of their friend every night, yearning for their presence. The chorus repeats the greeting, 'Hello, my friend, hello,' which conveys a sense of warmth and familiarity between the two people.

The verse that says, "Maybe it's been crazy, and maybe I'm to blame. But I put my heart above my head," suggests that the singer and their friend have been through some difficult times in their relationship, but their love has remained strong. The line "We've been through it all and you love me just the same" further emphasizes the unbreakable bond between the friends. The repetition of the greeting shows that the singer needs to hear their friend's voice simply to feel better and to let them know that they are loved.

I woke up with a strong urge to listen to Neil Diamond. And as I peruse his songs, 45 years old on the verge of tears (you know how that is), I am shocked not only by how great his songs are, but by how many of them are great. This one is gorgeous. God bless you all.

Neil is a legend!!!!!! My surviving grandmother and her sister(aunt jan) are HUGE neil diamond fans so i grew up around plenty of neil. Some folks may refer to neil diamond as old fogie music but they could not be more wrong.
Diamonds music is universal. When your happy, sad or just need a good song to lift your spirits just pop in that disk or mp3 and crank up some good ol neil diamond. Hell always come to the rescue😁
