Close to Me
Beat-Dream Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Close every door to me
Hide all the world from me
Bar all the windows
and shut out the light
Do what you want with me
Hate me and laugh at me
darken my daytime
and torture my night
If my life were important I
Would ask will I live or die
But I know the answers
Lie far from this world

Close every door to me
Keep those I love from me
Children of Israel are never alone
For I know I shall find
my own peace of mind
for I have been promised
A land of my own

(Choir)
Close every door to me
Hide All the world from me
Bar all the windows
and shut out the light

La x 40

(Joseph)
Just give me a number
Instead of my name
forget all about me
and let me decay

I do not matter
I'm only one person
Destroy me completely
Then throw me away
If my life were important I
Would ask will I live or die
But I know the answers
Lie far from this world

Close every door to me
Keep those I love from me
Children of Israel
Are never alone
For we know we shall find
Our own piece of mind

For we have been promised
A land of our own

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Beat-Dream's song Close To Me express the feeling of being isolated and rejected by society. The singer feels so hopeless and helpless that they ask for all doors to be closed, the world to be hidden, and the lights to be shut out. They ask to be hated, laugh at and tortured to darken their daytime and torture their night. The character is convinced that they do not matter as an individual and is ready to be abandoned completely.

However, the singer finds a source of hope in the Children of Israel who are never alone and have been promised a land of their own. They feel that they shall find their own peace of mind despite the darkness that surrounds them. The lyrics, therefore, present a message of hope amidst despair.

The song is inspired by the Bible story of Joseph's coat of many colors, in which Joseph is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, and thrown into prison for refusing to sleep with his master's wife. He is forgotten by society and has no hope of ever leaving prison, but his faith in God leads him to interpret the dreams of his fellow prisoners and eventually earns him favor with Pharaoh, the King of Egypt.
