In 1958, Ben Nelson joined a doo wop group, The Five Crowns. Later that same year, The Drifters' manager fired the members of the group and replaced them with The Five Crowns, who had performed several engagements with The Drifters. He co-wrote the first hit by the new version of The Drifters, "There Goes My Baby" (1959). He also sang lead, using his birth name, on "Save the Last Dance for Me," a song written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, "Dance With Me," "This Magic Moment," "I Count the Tears," and other The Drifters hits.
In 1960 he left the group after failing to gain a salary increase and a fairer share of the group's royalties. At this point he assumed the more memorable stage name Ben E. King in preparation for a solo career. Remaining on Atlantic, King scored his first solo hit with the stylish, Latin-tinged ballad "Spanish Harlem" (1961). "Stand by Me" was his next recording. "Stand by Me", written by King along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller was voted one of the Songs of the Century by the Recording Industry Association of America. "Stand by Me" and "Spanish Harlem" were named as two of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and were both also given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.
King's records continued to place well on the pop charts until 1963, when British pop bands began to dominate the popular music scene. His hits after 1963 were "What is Soul?" (1967), "Supernatural Thing, part 1" (1975), and the re-issue in 1986 of "Stand by Me" following the song's use as the theme music to the movie of the same name.

Yea yea yea
I hear death around the corner
I hear death around the corner but we still sliding
Yea yea
I hear death around the corner boy it aint no
They say I'm wrong cus sometimes I don't answer my phone
But I been going through some things feel like I'm better alone
Cus I see death around that corner I aint ready to go
I see death around that corner I ain't ready to go
Death around that corner I ain't ready to go
I see death around that corner I ain't ready to go
Death around that corner I ain't ready to go
I see death around that corner ain't ready for it but I'm ready
Riding with my lil stepper clutching modified weapons
Got a drum in my ar that's 100 rounds with me
A nigga want beef gone get a homicide special
That's a unidentified 357 and a walk up
You speak to me you speaking to a king nigga talk up
Can't just be another nigga with a dream I had to boss up
Can't just be part of the team to be a king you got to off some
Talk to em
Thuggin since adolescent before we had weapons we had a presence
You can't name shit in these streets that we haven't did
Feel like we graduated we buying cribs and having kids
I need to free my soul thoughts of my past won't let me live
Been through shit for real got scars so deep it never healed
Day one niggas switching out the blue like was it ever real
Told lil one to chill ill six him up when he get a kill
Nah for real
They say I'm wrong cus sometimes I don't answer my phone
But I been going through some things feel like I'm better alone
I been riding with that pipe like I'm ready to score
Cus I see death around that corner I aint ready to go
I see death around that corner I ain't ready to go
Death around that corner I ain't ready to go
I see death around that corner I ain't ready to go
Death around that corner I ain't ready to go
1st I wasn't thinking bout hustling pack for pack
But seen my cousins then I had to try it
For I can properly even see
Or feel my granny hug on me on my daddy side
Staring at that picture when she held me in her arms
Like she knew I was the golden child
Still can't believe my sugar mama died
All I want to do is make the family proud
I was just a infant like lil herbo child
Want the money clean you gone have to rinse it down
Try to take from me then you gone hear a pow
And I can't lie
I did some dirt in these streets i need sanitizing
I come in peace but enticing the violence
Let em off the leash they coming to eat somebody
And way before the sba we really beat that block down
Till sun up I got to see that profit
It be way too many deaths around me
Can't come outside without that breathalyzer
Rip chucky before he died In a house fire them boys paralyzed him
If a nigga play then we gone slip and slide
I hear death around the corner
I hear death around the corner and we still sliding
I hear death around the corner
Boy this ain't no call of duty when you through you can't respawn
I hear death around the corner
With a shoebox full of dope bout to hit that store
This juggin' all I got
I hear death around the corner
The lyrics of "Around the Corner" by Ben E. King convey a sense of impending danger, as the singer discusses how he sees death around every corner. The opening lines repeat the phrase "yea yea" several times in a rhythmic, almost chant-like style, creating a sense of foreboding. The verses describe the singer's experiences in the streets, including riding with a weapon and feeling better alone. He also describes how everyone around him seems to be dying or facing danger, making him feel like he's constantly on edge.
The chorus repeats the phrase "I see death around that corner, I ain't ready to go" several times, emphasizing the theme of mortality and the singer's fear of dying. The final verse includes several references to the singer's past, including his experiences hustling and the death of his grandmother. The overall message seems to be that life in the streets is dangerous and unpredictable, and that death is always lurking around the corner.
