Taking A chance On Love
Benny Goodman Benny Goodman and His Orchestra & Helen Forrest Lyrics

Here I go again, I hear those trumpets blow again
All aglow again, taking a chance on love
Here I slide again, about to take that ride again
Starry-eyed again, taking a chance on love

I thought that cards were a frame-up, I never would try
But now I'm taking the game up and the ace of hearts is high
Things are mending now, I see a rainbow blending now
We'll have a happy ending now, taking a chance on love

Superb arrangement! This side was really the one instance (that comes to mind with me, anyway) in which Helen, despite both her established fame from her prior work with the Shaw orch. and her great ability, had the big hit version while with Goodman -- whom she, incidentally, did not like. She made dozens of records during her nearly two-year stay with the band, but it always seemed to be another band, such as, frequently, T. Dorsey's, that wound up with the hit. This magnificent arrangement is the work of the great Fletcher Henderson. I love that socko four-bar reeds-brass introduction, which interestingly bears a very strong resemblance to the intro to Goodman's '36 "You're Giving Me A Song And A Dance."

Edgar Sampson, who played sax for Henderson, also did some fine arrangements for Benny Goodman as well as composing 'Stompin' at the Savoy' and 'Don't Be That Way'.

@harold westbrook Yes, I'm well acquainted with, and fond of, Sampson's work with Henderson, Chick Webb and, of course, Goodman. He was responsible for "If Dreams Come True," which bears a resemblance to "Stompin'". A triple-threat, as composer, arranger, musician!
