After two demo tapes in 1990 and 1991, the band were picked up by French label Adipocere Records, which made possible the band's first two commercial releases, 1993's Up Through the Linear Shades 7" and 1994's Longing For Scarlet Days EP. In 1995, Beyond Dawn released their critically acclaimed full length debut Pity Love on Candlelight Records. Soon after, the band began work on an album intended to be a departure from the doom metal music they were becoming known for, but their record label was less than pleased with the band's drastic change in sound and they were soon in search of a new label. They eventually signed with Misanthropy Records and released Revelry in 1998 to more critical praise. Beyond Dawn eventually resumed work on the would-be 1996 album and, after adding additional material and overdubs, released In Reverie in 1999 on Eibon Records, which would also be reissued in 2005 with two bonus tracks included. During the latter half of 1999, they released Electric Sulking Machine on the Peaceville label, which soon became a favorite amongst fans and remains sought after due to its limited pressing.
Due in part to the limited commercial success of Frysh, the band went on hiatus in 2003 to focus on other projects. Some time later, several tracks from Frysh were remixed by various electronic and EBM artists and released in the form of the double LP We're Down With Species of Any Kind in 2005. The band remains on an indefinite hiatus.

Or should I say I caught up with you
Anyway it was inevitable
Love's sweet aroma leaves quite a trace
Too bad it doesn't last
It never has, it never will
It just can't last
Damn (why can't it last?)
Step down
Let my hollowness embrace you
Step down
And my emptiness corrupt you
Do I ever get lonely?
There's only one of us left now
What do you think?
Of course there's always old Mr. Hate
Not too much company in him after the apocalypse
Too bad "travel" is not part of my vocabulary
Step down
Let my hollowness embrace you
Step down
And my emptiness corrupt you
The lyrics to Beyond Dawn’s song “Love’s True Defender” captures the fleeting nature of love and the aftermath of its demise. The lyricist seems to be addressing someone who they had just caught up with, someone with whom they had a love affair. The lyricist acknowledges the inevitability of their encounter and recognizes that “love’s sweet aroma leaves quite a trace.” However, the acknowledgement of the sweet aroma is followed by the bitter truth that love never lasts. The lyricist is frustrated with the fleeting nature of love and exclaims “why can't it last?”
The second verse contrasts the first as the lyricist delves into their emptiness and hollowness. They acknowledge that they are alone, and only “Mr. Hate” is left for them to keep company with. The negative connotations associated with this verse expose the darker side of love where emptiness and loneliness take over once the love has faded. The lyricist almost seems to be inviting the person they are addressing to join them in their misery. The repetition of “step down” magnifies the desperation in the invitation. The invitation is not one that anyone would want to accept as their “emptiness corrupts”.
Overall, “Love’s True Defender” is a melancholy tribute to love’s fleeting nature and the aftermath of its end. It’s a reminder that love is not always bright and great, leaving behind only emptiness and loneliness once it fades away.
