After two demo tapes in 1990 and 1991, the band were picked up by French label Adipocere Records, which made possible the band's first two commercial releases, 1993's Up Through the Linear Shades 7" and 1994's Longing For Scarlet Days EP. In 1995, Beyond Dawn released their critically acclaimed full length debut Pity Love on Candlelight Records. Soon after, the band began work on an album intended to be a departure from the doom metal music they were becoming known for, but their record label was less than pleased with the band's drastic change in sound and they were soon in search of a new label. They eventually signed with Misanthropy Records and released Revelry in 1998 to more critical praise. Beyond Dawn eventually resumed work on the would-be 1996 album and, after adding additional material and overdubs, released In Reverie in 1999 on Eibon Records, which would also be reissued in 2005 with two bonus tracks included. During the latter half of 1999, they released Electric Sulking Machine on the Peaceville label, which soon became a favorite amongst fans and remains sought after due to its limited pressing.
Due in part to the limited commercial success of Frysh, the band went on hiatus in 2003 to focus on other projects. Some time later, several tracks from Frysh were remixed by various electronic and EBM artists and released in the form of the double LP We're Down With Species of Any Kind in 2005. The band remains on an indefinite hiatus.
Maybe Deeper
Beyond Dawn Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I keep my distance but somehow I slip into their arms
And the well kept secret
Handing out compliments and stupid opinions
I loose myself
Figuring out how long I have pretended that I live here
Inside the private lives and ugly suicides
Maybe deeper I can't relate to the facts and I'm unable to act surprised
It's too familiar
Safe and sound inside of trouble deep feeling clever
There's not a thing that could wake me
You see like anyone of you people
Will be back here again to wake me when it's over
The lyrics of "Maybe Deeper" by Beyond Dawn convey the feelings of a person who is disconnected from the world around them. The singer is observing the world from a distance, keeping their guard up, but somehow still getting sucked into the various trivialities of human interaction. It is as if the singer is watching the world with a sense of detachment, experiencing it like a teenager who is just starting to feel the pressure of growing up in a hostile world.
The singer admits that they have been pretending to live in this world for a long time, but they can't seem to find any connection to it. The private lives and ugly suicides of others don't affect them, and they can't relate to the commercial signs and common sense that seem to govern the rest of society. The singer feels like they are unable to pretend to be surprised by anything because everything is too familiar to them.
The last two lines of the song, "Safe and sound inside of trouble deep feeling clever / There's not a thing that could wake me" imply that the singer has retreated into a protective shell of cleverness and self-awareness. The world's problems don't seem to affect them as they feel secure in their own bubble. However, the last line suggests that the singer understands that they cannot stay that way forever; eventually, they will need someone to bring them back to reality.
Overall, the song captures a sense of disconnection and alienation from the world that can sometimes come with growing up and facing the harsh realities of modern society.
