That's What It's Like To Be Lonesome
Bill Anderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The streets're dark and empty and you walk them all alone
You think about your love affair and wonder what went wrong
You go to bed each night and pray you'll never see the dawn
Afraid of each tomorrow with its heartless cold unknown
And that's what it's like to be lonesome with a heart a broken love taught to cry
And that's what it's like to be lonesome I know cause I'm a mighty lonesome guy

You search to find a tavern where the music is playing loud
You try to lose your heartaches in the laughter of the crowd
But the happy couples make you think of things that might have been

And you have to fight the teardrops till you're by yourself again
And that's what it's like...

Overall Meaning

In Bill Anderson's song "That's What It's Like to Be Lonesome," the lyrics depict a person who is experiencing deep loneliness and heartbreak. The streets are described as dark and empty, symbolizing the singer's isolated state. As they walk alone, they reflect on their failed love affair and question what went wrong. Each night, they go to bed, praying that they won't have to face another day filled with the heartless and unknown future that loneliness brings.

The feeling of being lonesome is further emphasized through the lyrics. The singer describes the pain of a broken heart that has been taught to cry. This phrase suggests that love has caused the heart to become wounded and sensitive, leading to constant sorrow. The repetition of the line "And that's what it's like to be lonesome" reinforces the emotional weight of this state, as if to say that this is the essence of loneliness itself.

In an attempt to escape the pain, the singer searches for a tavern where music is playing loudly. They hope that the laughter of the crowd will help them forget their heartache. However, witnessing the happiness of other couples only intensifies their feelings of longing and regret. They have to mask their tears and put on a brave face until they are alone again, showcasing the constant battle between vulnerability and maintaining a facade.

Overall, the song captures the raw emotions of loneliness and heartbreak, highlighting the anguish and longing that come with experiencing lost love.

There is none other than Mr. Bill Anderson.  The way he starts out this songs sound like how Ray Price would kick it off with that fiddle intro.  This man is emotional in most of his songs, honest, down to earth country singer.  You don't hear "down to earth" in today's so called country music anymore and that is a  shame.  This man can sing anything he wishes and makes you believe it through his whispery voice.  Love Bill Anderson.
