No More Lies
Bill Sharpe / Gary Numan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything, everything reminds me
Easily, you're walking out so easily
No goodbye's not even a tear for me
Now you cry you'd like to have my company

But I'm not gonna call you again
I'm not gonna pick up the phone
No, I'm not going through it again
You're not gonna leave me alone

No more lies
I don't need this anymore i heard it all
And now I'm gonna close the door seems to me
Nothing comes that easily time to leave
You take it all and run from me

But I'm not gonna call you again
I'm not gonna pick up the phone

No, I'm not going through it again
You're not gonna leave me alone

Overall Meaning

The song No More Lies by Bill Sharpe and Gary Numan is an emotional song that tells a story of love and heartbreak. The opening line of "Now I'm behind glass" creates a feeling of being trapped and isolated, possibly referencing to a sense of being left behind. The singer expresses a desire to talk to the person they miss, yet the telephone lines blind their ability to truly connect. The line "You have defaced my face, I bet you laughed at me" seems to suggest that the person who they miss may have caused their downfall or pain, and even enjoyed it. The singer realizes that they need no-one, yet misses the person they are referring to.

The chorus "Please push no more" is a plea to whoever caused them hurt or pain not to push them further, to not cause anymore distress. The following lines are melancholic as they speak of the end of the relationship, "Now it's all over for sure, I'll walk back home, We must all come down, We all grow old." The line "We are close, we are hurt, So that was love" speaks to the universal truth that love is not all sunshine and rainbows, it hurts, but ultimately it's worth it. The final line "And love she kills me, It needs to, so" shows acceptance that they have been hurt, yet understands that love is complex and difficult.

A very underestimated and unique duo, Gary & Bill deserved more success as the duo Sharpe & Numan !

STEVEL361

Very underrated album

DocKnight Philco

really brilliant track by Gary Numan.. was an interesting change of direction from what he was doing at a time - at least these songs had a tune to anything else that came before. But he's def. back on form now with his modern classic Splinter and still as relevant as ever after all these years

This Is Dylan Greenberg

I’ve always loved this album

So happy that I finally got a Numan & Sharpe vinyl, I enjoyed their work as a duo. Gary looked much more free when performing and dancing than in the earlier years. Great video ☺

Thomas Gray

Amelia Wagus - I'm glad you too like their collaboration. I've been a huge Numan fan from the beginning but I think many of his fans are somewhat ungrateful to Bill, he is one of the kindest people I know (he has put me on his guests lists over the years and fed me a few pints and kebabs!) and he did help Gary a hell of a lot in the 80s, many of Gary's session players like Jackie Rawe, Tessa Niles and Tracey Ackerman were sourced through Shakatak as were engineers like Nick Smith. One has to remember how much Gary was struggling financially back then and he needed the collaboration. Bill's wife, Jill, was my closest colleague for some years and she is absolutely one of my best friends, she and Bill are really good fun although I frustrate him with my refusal to do internet banking! Some Numan fans think there is a bit of a stuffy image with Shakatak but they really are not like that at all.
