I'll Get By
Billie Holiday; Teddy Wilson & His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll get by
As long as I have you
Oh there be rain
And darkness too
I'll not complain
I'll live with you

Poverty
May come to me that's true
But what care I
I'll get by
As long as I have you

I'll get by
As long as I have you
Oh there be rain
And darkness too
I'll not complain
I'll live with you

Ah, but tears
May come to me, that's true
But what care I

I'll get by
As long as I have you

Ever since I saw the film 'Lady Sings The Blues' with Diana Ross I have sought out Billie's recordings and to now own a few originals, even in a loved condition is a thrill. Such a sad life but what a wonderful voice and delivery.

Thank you for your upload, it's much appreciatedā£"I'll Get By (As Long as I Have You)" is a popular song that was recorded by Teddy Wilson and His Orchestra on May 11th, 1937, in New York City. The recording is known for its association with the vocals of Billie Holiday, who was a featured vocalist with Teddy Wilson's Orchestra during that time. I'm not certain if the date in your title refers to the pressing, release, or recording of the song. Interestingly, the initial release of this magnificent piece of art also occurred in the same year as its recording (Brunswick ā€“ 7903).

Once again the original comes up trumps - this number fits the arrangement really well, later versions were over produced (not mentioning any names but Connie and Shirley...:-)
