I Didn't Know What Time It Was
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I was young
Yesterday, perhaps
Danced with Jim and Paul
And kissed some other chaps.
Once I was young,
But never was naive.
I thought I had a trick or two
Up my imaginary sleeve.
And now I know I was naive.

I didn't know what time it was
Then I met you.
Oh, what a lovely time it was,
How sublime it was too!
I didn't know what time it was
You hold my hand.
Warm like the month of May it was,
And I'll say it was grand.

Grand to be alive, to be young,
To be mad, to be yours alone!
Grand tosee your face, feel your touch,
Hear your voice say I'm all your own.

I didn't know what time it was
Live was no prize.
I wanted love and here it was
Shining out of your eyes.
I'm wise,
And I know what time it is now.

Once I was old
Twenty years or so
Rather well preserved,
The wrinkles didn't show.
Once I was old,
But not too old for fun.
I used to hunt for little girls
Up my imaginary gun.
But now I ain't for only one!

I didn't know what time it was
Then I met you.
Oh, what a lovely time it was,
How sublime it was too!
I didn't know what time it was
You hold my hand.
Warm like the month of May it was,
And I'll say it was grand.

Grand to be alive, to be young,
To be mad, to be yours alone!
Grand tosee your face, feel your touch,
Hear your voice say I'm all your own.

I didn't know what time it was
Live was no prize.
I wanted love and here it was
Shining out of your eyes.

I'm wise,
And I know what time it is now.

Overall Meaning

In Billie Holiday's song "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," the singer reminisces about their younger days of dancing with different men, being kissed by other chaps, and thinking they had a few tricks up their sleeve. They then transition to the love they found in their life, which transformed their understanding of time and made them feel alive. The individual did not know what time it was before meeting their love, and they realized that they were naive in their previous beliefs about love and the world. The singer is grateful for having found love that is real and from the heart.

The lyrics express a journey from youthful innocence to a deeper understanding of the complexities of love and life. The singer initially thought they had some knowledge in love and life, but they soon realized that they were naive. The discovery of their love brought them into a universe where they are young, alive, and all alone with their companion. The sense of time has changed from where they had wanted to continue being young to cherishing the moments they enjoy with their partner. The song is a celebration of age differences and love, the past and the present.

This marvelous singer died in 1959, drugs and alcohol in her a tormented life, in her voice you find the disillusion about her own life
I love and I miss her wonderful voice

Lady Day was a much different singer in 1957 than she was in 1937 or 1947. Some might say she was weary of life, or that she'd lost some of her talent. I say don't compare her to her previous self. She was still one of the greatest singers around in 1957.
