stand still
Billy Ray Cyrus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I turned twenty, I was overcome
With the thought that I might not turn twenty one
Death upon my doorstep, if I took just one more step
There'd be nothing left of me except these songs

And my father told me
"Noah, when you don't know where you're going
Just stand still, soon enough you will
And when all the hope and joy you feel
Turns into paranoia, 'cause it will, remember just stand still"

Just stand still
Just stand still, oh

As you get older it gets harder to change
You might find yourself alone with just your shame
But it's not over, it's all gonna be okay
And when times are tough, remember what I say

'Cause my grandfather told my father
"It don't get easier, just harder
Yes, it will, remember just stand still
And when all the hope and joy you feel
Turns into paranoia, 'cause it will, remember just stand still"

Just stand still
Just stand still, yeah

Just stand still and watch a sunset bleed
With only dirt under your feet to feel
Just stand still
Sixty seven thousand miles an hour around the sun
And that is how it feels
Just stand still

In the universe's symphony, yeah
Everything gets lost in it, you will
Just stand still
You'll be right, you'll be wrong
You'll be fine 'cause life goes on and on, until, until

Just stand still (just stand still, Just stand, Just stand still, Just stand still, still)
Just stand still (just stand still, Just stand, Just stand still)
Just stand still (just stand still, still)
Just stand still

Just stand still, whoa
Just stand still

Overall Meaning

The song "Stand Still" by Billy Ray Cyrus is a song about dealing with the uncertainties that life throws our way. The song talks about how at age 20, the singer was overwhelmed with the thought of not turning 21. The fear of mortality loomed over him and he was apprehensive about what the future might hold for him. He felt that his songs would be the only thing left of him if he died. His father came to him with wise advice and told him to stand still. When one doesn't know where they're going, they should stand still and wait. Eventually, things will fall into place, and one will know what to do. Even if everything seems to be falling apart, standing still can help people come to terms with their present and give them clarity.

The song proceeds to talk about how as people get older, it gets harder to change, and they may be left alone with just their shame. However, even at this point, things are not over, and everything will be okay. The singer's grandfather advises him that life doesn't get easier, it gets harder. However, in those difficult times, one must remember to stand still. Even if all the hope and joy that people feel turn into paranoia, standing still can still be an anchor in turbulent times. The song directs people to stand still and watch a sunset bleed, feel the dirt under their feet, and try to find solace in the universe's symphony. Everything gets lost in it, and people are taught to stand still, knowing that life goes on and on.

"Stand Still"

When I was just a little boy,
I wandered through the woods
Searchin' for my daddy through the pines.
I guess I took a wrong turn
Somewhere along the way
But the Bible said
"Seek and ye shall find"
Daylight turned to darkness
Adventure turned to fear
And, when I found my way back home
His words I still can hear...

[Chorus:]
Stand Still!
When you're in the dark.
Listen to your heart
And pray for Gods will
Stand Still
Adrift in the wind...
Your voice within
Will be your best friend
Stand Still... and pray
Stand Still

Now that I'm a grown man
On my own and on my way
I've got my own decisions to be made
And when I'm at the crossroads
Unforsure and unforeseen,
I bow my head
And with these words I pray.

[Chorus]

My parents used to watch this show every Sunday back when it first aired in the early to mid-2000s
We used to get home from evening service and watch this.
The funny thing is, this came on right around my bedtime so I would always try to keep quiet on the couch so they wouldn't realize it's time for me to head upstairs.
- sometimes it actually worked and I could watch the whole episode.
If I got really lucky, I could watch Sue Thomes F.B.(I) Eye. which came on afterward.
So believe me when I say that this brings back a host of childhood memories

Now having a family of my own and looking back on those days, a little boy would do anything to avoid going to bed. But as time went on, even is a young 10 or 11-year-old, I took on an unexpected appreciation for both of those shows.
If I am not mistaken, at least for the time being, I believe both of these shows can be streamed on PureFlix
- thanks for posting!!!
