Tom's Diner
Bingo Players Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am sitting
In the morning
At the diner
On the corner

I am waiting
At the counter
For the man
To pour the coffee

And he fills it
Only halfway
And before
I even argue

He is looking
Out the window
At somebody
Coming in

"It is always
Nice to see you"
Says the man
Behind the counter

To the woman
Who has come in
She is shaking
Her umbrella

And I look
The other way
As they are kissing
Their hellos

I'm pretending
Not to see them
And Instead
I pour the milk

I open
Up the paper
There's a story
Of an actor

Who had died
While he was drinking
He was no one
I had heard of

And I'm turning
To the horoscope
And looking
For the funnies

When I'm feeling
Someone watching me
And so
I raise my head

There's a woman
On the outside
Looking inside
Does she see me?

No she does not
Really see me
Cause she sees
Her own reflection

And I'm trying
Not to notice
That she's hitching
Up her skirt

And while she's
Straightening her stockings
Her hair
Is getting wet

Oh, this rain
It will continue
Through the morning
As I'm listening

To the bells
Of the cathedral
I am thinking
Of your voice

And of the midnight picnic
Once upon a time
Before the rain began

I finish up my coffee
It's time to catch the train

Overall Meaning

Bingo Players' song "Tom's Diner" paints a picture of a regular morning at a diner on the corner. The singer is waiting for his coffee to be served and as the man behind the counter fills the cup only halfway, he's distracted by the entrance of a woman who shakes her umbrella. While he pretends not to notice their affectionate greeting, he reads the paper and the news story of an actor who died while drinking catches his eye. As he scans the horoscope and funnies, he senses someone watching him and raises his head to see a woman outside looking in, but not seeing him, rather her own reflection. The rain continues and he listens to the bells of the cathedral while thinking about someone he presumably misses. In the final scene, he finishes his coffee and moves to catch his train.

The song's lyrics convey a sense of detachment and loneliness amidst the mundane activities of daily life. The singer's attempt to avoid observing the affection between the woman and the man, his lack of interest in the actor's death, and his effort to avoid acknowledging the woman outside the diner show his emotional disconnection. However, the imagery of the cathedral bells and memories of a midnight picnic suggest a deep longing and nostalgia in him which he may be repressing or hiding.
