WE COULD MAKE IT IF WE TRY
By Black Stalin

So the Treasury broke and they say that recession jamming
And so to foreign countries Trinis start migrating
They lose faith in their country, they say we gone down the drain
They say no more could we see happy times again
But the will to recover in my people I have confidence
Although many may seem to feel that I talking nonsense
But the majority of we decide we not going to run
Because now is the time to show we patriotism.

For we country facing its darkest hour
So our people need us today more than ever
But in our fight to recover, if ever you feel to surrender
It have one little thing that I want you always remember...

We could make it if we try just a little harder
If we just give one more try, life will be much sweeter.

From the time Trini analyse just what was the problem
Yes, we start making very positive moves to solve them
We fire the old set of managers we had working
And is a new group we went and we bring in
And if the goods we require, them new managers not supplying
When election time come back 'round is new ones we bringing
For if is one thing about my people I could guarantee
That they would never ever put party before country.

And now we country facing its darkest hour
And our people need us today more than ever
But in our fight to recover, if ever you feel to surrender
It have one little thing that I want you always remember...

We could make it if we try just a little harder
If we just give one more try, life will be much sweeter.
When the Treasury was full and happy times some was enjoying
Is in Morvant and Laventille poor people was living
Now the Treasury flat and the country come back to square one
Poor people remain on the same old ghetto in John John
But to get we economy return today on sound footing
Is the same poor people 'Ten days' and COLA they taking
And without social unrest, poor people paying the price
Because they know for their country nothing too much to sacrifice.

And now we country facing its darkest hour
So our people need us today more than ever
But in our fight to recover, if ever you feel to surrender
It have one little thing that I want you always remember...

We could make it if we try just a little harder
If we just give one more try, life will be much sweeter.

Any time that we hear that Trinbago is facing a crisis
As loyal citizens it's our duty to stay and assist
For we know to weself there could never become a day
When our debts to this country we can repay
So who want to go could go, I have no objection
But while outside I want you to have some consideration
That your country of birth is in its worst day in history
And we must do what we can regardless where we may be.

Our country facing its darkest hour
And our people need us today more than ever
But in our fight to recover, if ever you feel to surrender
It have one little thing that I want we always remember...

We could make it if we try just a little harder
If we just give one more try life will be much sweeter.

We could make it if we try just a little harder
If we just give one more try, more try, more try, life will be much sweeter...

Overall Meaning

Black Stalin's song "We Could Make It If We Try" is a powerful message about the economic struggles faced by Trinidad and Tobago in the late 1980s. The lyrics describe a situation where the Treasury is broke, recession is rampant, and citizens are losing faith in their country. Despite this adversity, Black Stalin remains optimistic that by working together, Trinidad and Tobago can come out of this crisis stronger than ever.

Throughout the song, Black Stalin encourages fellow Trinidadians to stay strong and united during these difficult times. He speaks about the importance of making positive moves to solve problems and firing old managers who are not doing their jobs. He also highlights the sacrifices that poor people are making to get the economy back on track and reminds everyone that the country needs their help and support.

The chorus of the song - "We could make it if we try just a little harder, if we just give one more try, life will be much sweeter" - is a call to action for all Trinidadians to band together and work towards a better future. This song serves as not only an anthem for Trinidad and Tobago's resilience but for those going through political and economic hardships globally.
