The Last Man in Europe
Blades Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now I'm expecting you to track me down

And yes I think I know what you'll say

This place was dark but now it's bright again

Oh no, don't tell me it's a new day
Need your tales of doom and gloom

So it can all be over soon

I wish that I could be The Last Man In Europe

Then would you fall for me, the last man in Europe

Don't poison me with fear and jealousy

And all the secrets that I'll never know

Deception hurts my brain like acid rain

So tell the truth and let the venom flow

Hurry up and block the sun

And maybe then I'll be the only one

I wish that I could be The Last Man In Europe

Then would you fall for me, the last man in Europe

Overall Meaning

In "The Last Man in Europe," Blades seems to be expressing a desire to escape from the bleak and unsettling reality of the world around him. He speaks directly to someone, perhaps a lover or a friend, who he expects to seek him out and offer their own bleak tales, but he doesn't want to hear them. He longs for isolation, imagining himself as the last man in Europe. He imagines that if he were the only one left, he would no longer have to deal with the horrors of the world, and he could finally find peace.

However, he recognizes that this desire is problematic. He doesn't want to be poisoned by fear and jealousy, and he doesn't want to be kept in the dark about the truth. He wants others to be honest with him, even if it hurts like acid rain. He wishes for the truth, even if it means the world might come crashing down around him.

Overall, "The Last Man in Europe" is a complex song that touches on themes of isolation, fear, and honesty. It shows Blades grappling with a desire to escape the harsh realities of the world, yet recognizing that living in denial or isolation is not the answer.

Should have made it big, one of Ireland's greatest ever bands, brightened up my younger years in Drogheda!

you can't be this empty

My heart sinks when I hear this, I bought the album when it came out and it was by far one of the best produced quality albums ever released in this Country. Bad record company management and just bad luck scuppered their chances. Still, at least the record was put out and we have the pleasure to hear it brilliance.

What people forget is that rockers and bikers loved them.
I remember a "Lark in the park" in St. Anne's park and they were kickin it so much that the bikers were there especially to hear them, openly admitted it too.
I loved them.
