Chocolate
Blood & Chocolate Artists Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't go to church on Sunday
I don't get on my knees to pray
Don't memorize the books of the bible
I got my own special way
I know Jesus loves me
Maybe just a little bit more
I fall to my knees every Sunday
At Zerelda Lee's candy store

It's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Makes me feel good inside
It's gotta be a chocolate Jesus
Keep me satisfied

Well, I don't want no Abba Zabba
Don't want no Almond Joy
There ain't nothing better
Suitable for this boy
The only thing that will pick him up
Better than a cup of gold
Only a chocolate Jesus
Will satisfy his soul

When the weather gets rough and it's whiskey in the shade
It's best to wrap your savior up in cellophane
Flows like the big muddy but that's okay
Pour him over ice cream for a nice parfait

It's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Good enough for me (for me)
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Good enough for me
It's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Make me feel so good inside (inside)

Got to be a chocolate Jesus
To keep me satisfied

Overall Meaning

In "Chocolate" by Blood & Chocolate Artists, the lyrics convey a unique perspective on spirituality and personal fulfillment. The singer expresses their unconventional approach to religion, highlighting the fact that they do not attend church or engage in traditional religious practices. Instead, they find their own meaning and connection to a higher power through their own "special way."

The mention of Jesus in the lyrics indicates that the singer still believes and acknowledges the love of Jesus, but in their own distinct manner. This is exemplified by the statement, "Maybe just a little bit more," suggesting a deeper, personal relationship with Jesus that may not align with traditional religious norms.

The chorus, "It's gotta be a chocolate Jesus, Makes me feel good inside, It's gotta be a chocolate Jesus, Keep me satisfied," adds a layer of metaphorical meaning to the lyrics. The mention of a chocolate Jesus symbolizes the singer's source of comfort and satisfaction. It represents something that brings them joy and fulfillment, like a spiritual indulgence.

Moreover, the lyrics hint at a sense of escapism in the face of hardship. When the weather gets rough, the singer suggests that it's best to "pour him over ice cream for a nice parfait." This implies that in times of trouble, they seek solace in the sweet and enjoyable aspects of life, which serve as a temporary distraction and comfort. Overall, "Chocolate" explores an individual's personal approach to finding meaning and fulfillment, highlighting the importance of finding one's own path rather than adhering to societal norms.

Roxy Woodward unfortunately that's extremely typical of people were used to being in controlling and domineering relationships. It sounds like your friend was testing Mr. Nice guy to see if he "cared" enough to insist "for her safety".

As you mentioned she was gaslighted previously so she probably has no idea the difference between healthy protective acts/offers and manipulative acts claiming to be or "for her own good."

The fact that he *offered*, then even asked if she was sure and respected her when she assured him that that's what she wanted was a HUGE green light (meaning that he wanted to double-check that she felt safe doing so).

But she has to get out of that conditioned programming of a knight in shining armor would still insist on escorting a delicate fragile maiden or even following her after her repeated fefusals.

-----

As an aside please keep her away from the Fifty shades series - or if she does want to expose herself to any of them, strap her down clockwork Orange style and force her to watch the Dom's videos on the subject.

I saw this video, and was SO LOOKING FORWARD TO IT! Because Blood and Chocolate is one of my favourite books; and I read the book and seen the movie (I hated the movie, and found myself completely disappointed in it).

As always, excellent review- I truly enjoyed watching it. Though, I do have some differing opinions, of course, for not everyone can agree:

I can understand why someone would not enjoy this book- especially when everyone has the free will to interpret things differently.

How I interpreted the book is less of a racial discussion, and more of "nature vs. nurture".
The werewolves represent nature. They are instinct. Vivian drinks the bath water like a dog would; and the sexual harassment (to only the werewolves) is less harassment, and more sexual advances. Rafe groping Vivian's breasts, in my interpretation, was more comparable to a male dog sniffing a female dog's heat; and Vivian turning on him to snap and hurt him in return was more comparable to a female dog turning down a male dog's attempt to mount. for example. This is not excusing sexual harassment at all, this is just my interpretation of what I thought it was a sort of metaphor for in the book. Especially since it was not only the male characters, but the females who were also committing sexual harassment, and it was only really restricted to that of the werewolves, and not the humans.

Vivian wanted to be human, and saw desire in Aiden due to his human nature. But she was also attracted to him, seeing that he could potentially be natural enough to understand the "nature", but cultured enough to keep her apart from the very nature she is, that she hated.

Gabriel, in the meantime, represented the nature she saw in herself. She was repulsed by him, because she never wanted the life of a monster- for she saw her instinctual drive to be monstrous. This is not realizing what he truly was, initially.

Astrid and Rafe were there to demonstrate the extreme of nature- murderous and dangerous. While Aiden, by the end, represented the extreme of culture- of nurture- afraid, and willing to end anything he did not understand. Gabriel acting as a protector and looking out for the benefit of both humans and werewolves demonstrated the good of nature- desiring balance within itself. Vivian, on the other hand, was the opposite- by attempting to eliminate her true nature for only nurturing, she found she was imbalanced.

The end, to me, was her realizing that her true self was not so bad, thus finding balance within herself, as nature does. However, her final statement of blood and chocolate was to demonstrate the inner conflict she still had now that she had a taste of something not of her world. And while she accepted it as inevitable, causing her to return to normal, she maintained the doubt, and it is unclear if the normality lasted or not.

So I felt the purpose of the book was to demonstrated the "nature vs. nurture" argument over an "interracial" argument, and how the best way is the balanced way, but that way brings us enough doubt to not fully follow or invest ourselves in it. And the whole "teenage angst" was simply to advance it in a way that is pretty natural. We all were, or have witnessed, the teenagers who suddenly start to hate the world because they felt misunderstood, and so they seek understanding in places they should not. That was yet another thing I thought it was attempting to say. Rather than seeking understanding from peers, whose philosophies may contradict and even damage the peer and the one turning to the peer, teenagers need to see that the world is not against them, but rather themselves; and by turning to people who are more experienced, and removed from that mindset, they will see the truth of the matter.

PS: This analysis is just my opinion of what the book was meaning; and it by no means represents my own philosophies to a full extent.

Werewolves should probably avoid chocolate.  It can build up to pretty toxic levels in canines.

@Doesn't Matter silver isn't actually a werewolf weakness it's a vampire weakness

Hunter Webster

I do love the concept of chocolate being a werewolf weakness, tbh.

Werewolves are not Canines....and I ADORE chocolate...

Rabbles the Binx Productions

@Trisha Pellis not true, they can't process theobromine to the same levels as a human and what they can process is done much more slowly, allowing it to bioaccumulate. Even larger dogs like Mastiffs, which can be upwards of 200 lbs, can be seriously harmed by eating far less chocolate than a human can handle; less than 5 ounces is enough to kill them. That's about 2 chocolate bars.

Average Awesome

Morgan Young makes sense cutting off heads, always seemed a bit odd that only silver would kill werewolves, if u don’t have decapitation and dismemberment always seemed like a good alternative to me

Romanian here, born and raised in Bucharest, and I want to say I really enjoy all the location shooting in the film. If nothing else, the director nailed the look and feel of Bucharest. Except for bone churches, those arent a thing in any part of the country

@Undead Ladybug I think you're thinking of the catacombs, in the underground of Paris. Some parts of it have the walls covered in human bones
