During 1970 and 1971, Wailer, Marley and Tosh worked with renowned reggae producers Leslie Kong and Lee "Scratch" Perry.
They released four albums before signing to Island Records in 1972. Two more albums were created before Tosh and Wailer left the band in 1974, citing grievances over label treatment and ideological differences. Marley carried on with a new line-up, including the I-Threes that put out seven more more albums. Marley died in 1981.
The Wailers were a groundbreaking ska and reggae group, noted for songs such as "Simmer Down", "Trenchtown Rock", "Nice Time", "War", "Stir It Up" and "Get Up, Stand Up".

What's New Pussycat
Bob Marley & The Wailers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What's new pussycat whoa oh
Pussycat, pussycat, I've got flowers
And lots of hours to spend time with you
So go and powder your cute little pussycat nose
Pussycat, pussycat, I love you yes I do
You and your pussycat nose
What's new pussycat whoa
What's new pussycat whoa oh oh
Pussycat, pussycat, you're so thrilling
And I'm so willing to care for you
So go and make up your big little pussycat eyes
Pussycat, pussycat, I love you yes I do
You and your pussycat eyes
What's new pussycat whoa
What's new pussycat whoa oh oh
Pussycat, pussycat, you're delicious
And if my wishes can all come true
I'll soon be kissing your sweet little pussycat lips
Pussycat, pussycat, I love you yes I do
You and your pussycat eyes whoa
You and your pussycat nose
At first glance, "What's New Pussycat" by Bob Marley & The Wailers may seem like just another playful love song with seemingly nonsensical lyrics. However, upon closer inspection, there is an underlying message about the treatment of women in society.
The repeated use of the term "pussycat" is a reference to women being objectified and treated like pets. The lyrics suggest that the singer sees the woman he is singing to as a possession to be cared for, played with and toyed with at his leisure. This is seen through lines such as "I've got flowers and lots of hours to spend time with you" and "so go and powder your cute little pussycat nose." These lines imply that the woman in question has nothing better to do than to spend time with the singer and look cute for him.
Moreover, the idea of "making up" one's "big little pussycat eyes" and the mention of "kissing your sweet little pussycat lips" reinforces the infantilization of women, suggesting that they are not only objects to be played with but are also childlike and innocent. Overall, the song raises questions about the societal expectations placed upon women and their treatment in relationships.

I have this in good condition as a white label... a romantic birthday present from a boyfriend when I was 16 years old... 30 years later I still have it...

A friend told me about this one, and my first response was "???!!!" After listening, and realizing it was from the Sixties, we both agreed "why not?". When one compares this to their stuff from the early seventies, the word 'evolution' certainly comes to mind, I.M.H.O....
