I'll Never Fall In Love Again
Bobbie Gentry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What do you get when you fall in love?
A girl with a pin to burst your bubble
That's what you get for all your trouble
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

What do you get when you kiss a girl?
You get enough germs to catch pneumonia
After you do she'll never phone you
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

Don't tell me what it's all about
'Cause I've been there and I'm glad I'm out
Out of those chains those chains that bind you
That is why I'm here to remind you

What do you get when you give your heart?
You get it all broken up and battered
That's what you get a heart that's shattered
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

Out of those chains those chains that bind you
That is why I'm here to remind you
What do you get when you fall in love?
You only get lies and pain and sorrow
So for at least until tomorrow
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

I'll never fall in love again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bobbie Gentry's song 'I'll Never Fall in Love Again' explore a cynical perspective on love and its negative consequences, warning against the potential hurt and disappointment that can arise from romantic relationships. The song takes a sarcastic tone, with each verse listing the negative outcomes of falling in love, such as being let down, getting sick, or having a broken heart. The refrain "I'll never fall in love again" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the singer's determination to avoid love at all costs.

The first verse refers to the idea of the "bubble" of infatuation that can be burst by the reality of a person's flaws, represented metaphorically by the "pin" held by the girl. The second verse suggests that physical contact with someone can result in negative consequences, such as illness, and that a woman may not reciprocate romantic feelings. The third verse dismisses any attempts to justify or explain the nature of love, as the singer has already experienced the pain and chaos that it brings. Finally, the fourth verse depicts love as a potentially destructive force, breaking hearts and leaving individuals in pain.

Despite the song's bitter and pessimistic message, its popularity suggests that many listeners can relate to the fear and disillusionment that can arise from love. By acknowledging these negative feelings, the song encourages a critical reflection on the nature of relationships and the importance of self-preservation.

This was constantly on radio 2 in the UK in the early to mid 70's (our lovely easy listening station back then - not so much now!) having already been a hit in 1969 and by then very much a 'back catalogue' track already on its way to being a little classic in its own right.. I had a normal and very uneventful but very happy suburban childhood but the bittersweet sadness of this song always strung a chord in me although of course I had no concept of the sort of love the song was about at the time. Years later I hear this song and having very much lived life's rich tapestry it now makes more sense and the sadness and poignancy now seem so much more acute. However I only have to hear the opening bars of the song and I am transported back to our G plan filled living room with the radiogram on, lying on the hearth rug in front of the electric fire, colouring pencils in hand and wondering what we would be having for our tea... - isn't nostalgia a wonderful thing...

This is a lovely description! I was 12 when this record was No.1. I had never been in love, but the song spoke to me, and I was delighted when it reached the top of the charts.
