Once he started a solo career, Brown enjoyed commercial and critical success with his second album Don't Be Cruel (1988) which spawned five Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles, including the number one hit "My Prerogative", and the Grammy Award-winning "Every Little Step". In 1989, Brown contributed two songs to the soundtrack of Ghostbusters II. In 1992, Brown married superstar singer Whitney Houston, with whom he later had a daughter named Bobbi Kristina Brown. The couple's drug issues and domestic disputes made them tabloid fodder.
Brown's next album Bobby (1992) spawned several singles including "Humpin' Around", "Get Away", and "Good Enough", however, sales of Bobby did not reach the level of its predecessor.
Brown also appeared in the films A Thin Line Between Love and Hate and Two Can Play That Game. He returned to New Edition for a reunion album and tour from 1996 to 1997, and returned with all six members for another stint in 2005. Brown and Houston starred in the 2005 reality show Being Bobby Brown; Houston filed for divorce two years later in 2007.

This is how it's goin' down
(All we need is a a stage, God)
Ha-ha, yeah, yeah, yeah
(Yeah, come on, ha-ha-ha)
It's on and poppin', baby
The Last Temptation, ha-ha
He's back
Turn the world over, B. Brown
Come on, come on
[Chorus: x2]
I know you're gettin' bored
Dealin' with him
I know you miss my lovin', my thuggin'
Thug Lovin'
And I know you're gettin' bored
I know you're livin' your life faithfully, safely, away from me
But you miss bein' next to me, don't you?
Don't let her love haunt you, lust for what you wanted
Go for your guns and back out on anyone who tries to interfere
or intervene on me
Peelin' your wide body out of them tight jeans
Wrist on freese, see it's on me
Shoes 19, comin' through in that new Bentley thing
From town to town and city to city
You and I make headlines like Lo and Diddy and Bob and Whitney
It appears the Lord sent me a down
But I'm real devilish and freak that
Forget the story, I know you're gettin' bored
And that boy ain't gettin' you horny no more, is he??
Cause when it's all said and done, it's me
Lovin', thuggin' and I know you
[Chorus]
And I know you're gettin' bored
Sweet thing livin' it
Won't you let me let you live it a little bit
I know a stressful relationship is hard to deal with
But here's how to deal with it
On your weekly visits
Use a code name to protect the innocent
Maybe I'm true generous
Generally believin' that all women want me
They don't want to get even
But who do you believe in
Is it money or God
Betrayal or trust, sustain your vows
Secretly or sacred
Cause I love it when you rock your body-body
Move your body-body
Drink up on the Bacardi
And roll up along side me
I love to see you wild and free
But occasionally you get cold wet feet
And all that it means to me is that you need my heat
Cause when it's said and done you're gonna want me
Lovin', thuggin' and I know you
[Chorus]
And I know you're gettin' bored
Baby, here I'm holdin' your love hostage
The ransom for you, sugar, be priceless
Cause you been gettin' at me in many a ways
Now tell your man to watch his back and duck them strays
Cause I been in a rage lately
Hopin' God'll forgive me for all the sin and all the woman
All the drama I been in and it's just the beginnin'
I hope your watching so you could see that nigga ain't built
like me!!
But we one in the same, that's why we get along
Freak off and get it on
When we make love lookin' somethin' like soft porn
Tell me, baby, do you really want to go home to him??
But the brightest of your days just goin' look dim
Cause you fuckin' with a loser, baby, you can't win
When it's said and done you're gonna need me
Lovin', thuggin' and I know you
[Chorus]
And I know you're gettin' bored
Yeah, yeah, I.G, Ja Rule

The lyrics of Ja Rule's song "Thug Lovin'" featuring Bobby Brown explore the idea that the latter's love interests, despite being in satisfying and healthy relationships, secretly yearn to return to a more dangerous, exciting, and perhaps even destructive type of love that Ja Rule, the "Thug," represents. The lyrics describe the singer's feelings of boredom and frustration with her current relationship, her desire for something more passionate and intense, and her reluctance to leave her safe, comfortable life for the tumultuous one she once had with the Thug. Through his rap verses, Ja Rule attempts to convince her to take a chance on him again, proposing that they use code names to mask their meetings and offering to love and protect her despite his "devilish" and "freaky" nature.
The song's chorus features Bobby Brown's vocals emphasizing that he knows the singer misses Thug's love and thuggin', and that she is getting bored with her current partner. The lyrics also mention other couples whose relationships were marred by turmoil and tumultuousness, such as Lo and Diddy and Bob and Whitney, which may suggest that the excitement of drama and conflict may be alluring to some people, even if it leads to tragic outcomes in the long run.
Overall, "Thug Lovin'" can be interpreted as a cautionary tale about the dangers of romanticizing unhealthy relationships and glamorizing violence and criminal behavior, but it can also be seen as a tribute to the allure of "bad boy" types and the thrill of forbidden love.
