Don't Ask My Neighbor
Bobby Caldwell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're wondering if I care about ya
Or if there's some cause that I should doubt ya
Oh I can see girl
That you don't know me very well
You're so unsure

You run here and there
To ask my feelings
But friends only guess
They can't really say

Don't ask my neighbors
Don't ask the friends I hang around
Don't be afraid to come to me
Don't ask my neighbors
Come to me
Don't be afraid

You ask all my friends
If I'm the same girl
You don't understand
You think I'm changing

Don't ask my neighbors
Come to me
Don't be afraid of what ya see
You'll find I love you

Come to me
Don't be afraid

Overall Meaning

Bobby Caldwell's song, Don't Ask My Neighbor, explores the themes of doubt, insecurity, and uncertainty in a romantic relationship. In the lyrics, the singer addresses the doubts of his lover, who wonders if he cares for her and if there is any reason for him to doubt her. The singer reassures her that she doesn't know him very well and that she doesn't need to rely on the opinions of friends and neighbors to understand his feelings towards her. He urges her to come to him directly to dispel her doubts and find the truth about his love for her.

Throughout the song, the singer emphasizes the importance of direct communication in a relationship. He suggests that relying on the opinions of others can lead to confusion and uncertainty, and that only by coming to him directly can his lover find the answers she is looking for. The song's chorus, "Don't ask my neighbors, don't ask the friends I hang around, don't be afraid to come to me" emphasizes this message and encourages his lover to trust him and their relationship.

I'm not surprised Bobby put his foot in this. He's a great singer. This is just the first and only rendition I've heard from a male. The Emotions, Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold, and Jade. I know all those versions. But I love this take. This song is clearly just fabulous.

I can't remember which one (from the emotions) was in the studio when he wrote this and it's just amazing

Susi Gilmartin

This guy will be able to woo anyone even when he's 80 as long as he has this voice!

Mari Laucher

Doesn't need the voice. Love the voice though.

How I wish he'd made it to 80 years. So glad I saw him in 2017, just before he became really ill.

I grew up in the '70's so the only version of this song was sung by the Emotions but Bobby did this cover justice! Beautiful!
