My heart
Boycott feat. M.Slice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The kids have a new take
A new take on faith
Pick up the pieces
Get carried away
I came home to a city half erased
I came home to face what we faced
This place needs me here to start
This place is the beat of my heart

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)
Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

The storm didn't kill me
The government changed
Hear the answer call
Hear the song rearranged
Hear the tress, the ghosts and the buildings sing
With the wisdom to reconcile this thing
It's sweet and it's sad and it's true
How it doesn't look bitter on you

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)
Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

Mother and father
I stand beside you
The good of this world
Might help see me through
This place needs me here to start
This place is the beat of my heart

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)
Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)
Oh my heart

Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

Overall Meaning

The first two lines of the song, "The kids have a new take, a new take on faith," suggest that there’s a new generation with a new perspective on faith, which might differ from the previous generation’s perspective. The next two lines, "Pick up the pieces, get carried away," may be a call to action. It’s a way of saying that things might not have gone as you had planned them to, or that you might have experienced setbacks, but it's time to pick up the pieces and move forward.

The next two lines of the chorus, "I came home to a city half erased, I came home to face what we faced," might suggest that the singer has been away from the city or the place they call home for a while. Perhaps they left with some kind of expectation in mind but came back to find everything completely different. The last two lines of the chorus, "This place needs me here to start, this place is the beat of my heart," indicates that despite everything that has happened, the singer is still connected to this place and that it is important for them to be back to help rebuild.

In the second verse, the line "The storm didn't kill me, the government changed," refers to the fact that despite the challenges the singer has faced, they’ve managed to weather the storm. The line "Hear the trees, the ghosts, and the buildings sing, with the wisdom to reconcile this thing," may refer to the idea that nature, history, and architecture all have something to say about the situation. The line "It's sweet and it's sad and it's true, how it doesn't look bitter on you," could mean that even though the situation is sad or bittersweet, they’re not going to let it get the best of them.

The final verse, "Mother and father, I stand beside you, the good of this world might help see me through," seems to suggest that the singer’s parents are still in their life, and perhaps they can draw comfort from their support. The line "This place needs me here to start, this place is the beat of my heart," is repeated once again, emphasizing the fact that this place is important to them.
