learning Spanish in the lesson was very easy as I know Portuguese and listening to native Spanish speakers was easy to understand but then to speak Spanish to them was a whole other level of difficulty. Portuguese and Spanish wasn't a good mix, only my Spanish teacher could properly understand me as she knew Portuguese (brasillian)

My other grandmother listened to classical music mostly, but she did love certain songs from the 30s and 40s. She didn't have much use for music when the 50s hit but then she had a lot of kids then and no time.

The first time I ever heard this song, performed by this group, was around 1966 on the Mike Douglas Show.
Douglas deferred to one of his guests, Louie Nye, allowing him to say, "This group has one of the most tasteful sounds I have ever heard."
And then they played this tune, sounding, live, exactly like this.
My ears, which were addicted to British bands (especially the Animals) at that time, were opened HUGELY.
Ironically, I went shopping with my mother the next day, and the LP this was on was on sale at the checkout aisle at A&P for 99 cents...
...and I still have it.

Very true. When I got into Bossa Nova (or Samba) of the 1960s I had no idea that most of the classic samba songs were mostly covers of Jorge Ben Jor songs with the exception of Joao Gilberto. Sergio Mendes is a great arranger, but his group has mostly gained success by doing covers.

I was just about to enter my teen years in the early 1960's when bossa nova and jazz samba started getting airplay on Detroit's jazz FM stations and I would listen on a little transistor radio. While the other kids were into rock, very quickly my little mind was blown by this Brazilian music that moved me in ways no American music did or has since. I remember walking & listening and trying to sing along in my own made-up Brazilian Portuguese just because I loved the sound of it. It's nice to see this music still resonates with some people. It will always resonate with my heart.

The first time I heard this song was in the movie "Joe Versus the Volcano." This song played during the montage where Tom Hanks' character is out on his high-end shopping spree. I was hooked on the song instantly.

I remember seeing Lani sing a few times in a club on Wells Street in Chicago around 64, 65 something like that. The area then was called Old Town, where all hippies hung out and you didn't even have to smoke weed to get high, just breath the air. I remember telling my friends this girl is going somewhere good. When she ended up with Brasil 66, did not surprise me at all, probably one of the sweetest voices on the planet, just love her.

Not only a great song which is timeless really but the Album Cover in which the whole group stands amidst a tropical environment is very nice to see. And Samba has been one of my favorite rhythms ever since I heard it on a LP my late Dad had and played often.

when I was about 12to13,I started hearing about Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66. They were a Uber mixture of the most exotic rhythms and harmony imaginable‼️🎤🎤🎤🎤To me, at my most influential age, they were immersed in mystery; simultaneously hot and cool, sometimes dark and totally sophisticated; they were a world within a world. And guess what⁉️ If I was stranded on a deserted island w/ only a minimum choice of music, my collection would be seriously lacking w/o their inclusion !!! Now,"Mas Que Nada" that‼️😁

One of those songs that are timeless really. I liked it since I heard it and had some difficulty in understanding what was being said as it is in Portuguese. However since I speak Spanish I managed to understand the song after hearing it five times.

It was sure surprising for me to learn Lani Hall was American I thought at first she was either Brazilian or Portuguese. Since she sang so well in that language. And the music is great too and excellent combination of the girls' voices with the music which has that nice tropical touch.
