Figure
Breathe In Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

twenty years and twenty days
so much hoped for in so many ways
time is spent wondering minds on travel
when will it happen how will i handle?
are you my insight or were you my foresight?
i'll dream myself to sleep and question through the night

thank you for give me these answers to see
and taking time to show your true self to me

fuck you you fucking fuck
man of year award you're shit out of luck
thanks for showing me how to be a man
observe act opposite now i understand
how many left turns before you feel right?
forced i love you must make your night
who will be there when death comes to call?
funny the outcome who banished them all?

do all that you've said not what you've done
i've finally shown my face around
my hearts been frozen numb
twenty years of angst for this to come
am i a long lost tragedy
or just my fathers son?

when i was your age look what i have done
don't feed me that bullshit you ran out on your son
don't preach your ethics o noble man of charm
for a man was known to pat his back until he broke his arm
thank you for giving me this glance
now i know what i must do to give my son a chance

no i will never be like you you fuck.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Breathe In's song "Figure" seems to be expressing the anguish of wanting something, whether it's a dream, an accomplishment or maybe even answers, with the passage of time. The character in the song appears to be pondering over when this thing they desire will happen and imagining how they will cope with it when it does. The lyrics use a lot of rhetorical questions that point to uncertainty and confusion as the character openly questions whether they have had the right guidance or direction in their life thus far.

In the second verse, the song takes a different turn as the lyrics take on an indignant and reproaching tone towards a male figure in the character's life, 'Man of the year award you're shit out of luck'. The character accuses this person of being a bad influence, and the lyrics explicitly state that they do not want to be like this person. The lyrics continue to convey the character's struggle with self-identity and their relationship with their father.

The song's chorus builds on the idea of learning from others' mistakes, and the importance of being a positive role model for future generations. The song's lyrics are powerful, and they hint at the idea of generational trauma, emphasizing the importance of making the right choices to break this cycle.

Hey, so here we are
Beneath the moon the rising sun and stars
It's a brand new day, it's a brand new start
To greet the world it's me and my guitar
When you feel alone, when you feel afraid
Don't hesitate to call my name
Cause I'll be there, be there for you
Cause, I'll be there when your feeling blue

Breathe and take it in
Breathe, take it in
Breathe and take it in
Breathe, take it in

From the hillside to the seas
From the mountains to the trees
There this place I long to be
And if I asked you, would you come with me?
Well I don't care what they say
I'd leave it all behind and move away
Won't you help me make my dreams come true
Won't you love me like I love you

Breathe and take it in
Breathe, take it in
Breathe and take it in
Breathe, take it all in

It's so easy lovin' you
Why do you make it so hard to do?
It's so easy lovin' you
Why do you make it so hard to do?
So hard to do [x8]

Can yo hear me, can you feel me?
It's alright, well if you only knew
Won't you hold me, won't you love me
Oh I'm still loving you, oh why?

We just saw an amazing stick figure show in Seattle. We discovered stick figure last summer, when they were the only medicine that worked for us. We lost our dog Maggie in a long, painful death. We were crushed. It hurt to breathe. Too many memories at home, so we'd just drive around in the car listening to stick figure for hours every day/night. It was the only medicine that worked. Gradually over weeks, it didn't hurt quite as much to be at home. We still miss our sweet Maggie, but it's mellowed into good memories and love. I think stick figure works well for grief, because there's both beauty and melancholy in the songs. It doesn't pretend that life doesn't hurt, but helps embrace the hurt into the beauty. Thank you stick figure.
