Embracing an effortless eloquence and cocoa butter smooth persona, the music of Brian McKnight has defined the true meaning of an American soul-man since 1991. Like his spiritual Motown godfathers, this upstate New York native has a velvety voice and silky style that captures the vibe of vintage soul without being old fashion. On his latest disc Ten, that blend can be clearly heard.
While Brian’s aspirations might have seemed like a lofty ambition, the longevity of his career is a testament to the purity of his vision. With the release of Ten, McKnight’s first disc for his new label Warner Bros Records, the Grammy-nominated singer could not be more pleased with the outcome. Without a doubt, the landscape of soul music has gotten younger, but that fact did not hinder McKnight’s creative process.
After 16 million albums sold since his self-titled debut, it would have been too easy for McKnight to simply follow the R&B template of rote romanticism. But on Ten, the artist in him felt the need to be more revealing. Though McKnight has been friends with producers Tim & Bob for over ten years, this is the trio’s first collaboration.
Though Brian has never been the kind of singer/songwriter that one would call political that didn’t stop him from penning “Red, White & Blue,” a heart wrenching ode for the men and women currently at war, teaming up with country star Rascal Flatts.
Currently working on a variety of projects including a talk show and soundtracks for two upcoming Tyler Perry projects, the veteran soul singer could not be happier with the outcome of Ten. For fans of real music, Ten is the perfect addition to the soul cannon.
You Should Be Mine

Bay Boy we dont' stop, we rock we rock
Yo,I hit you the sound that the world can't take
Came straight out the gig playing two point eight
Near studded, jewel flooded, got to love it
First rap cat with an R&B budget
Everyday on the TV, me and PD
Girls see PD, make their man break the CD
Somewhere in Maui, 'til I go back to Cali
Can't understand how he can treat you
The way that he does
Give me the chance to show you baby
You're better off with me
Oh so baby let me try, I wanna make you smile
I wanna love you like you need to be loved
I'll never let you down, I'll always be around
And you should be mine
If he don't love you right, don't waste your time
If he don't treat you like you should, then you should be mine
Why can't you see you should be happy
And I don't know why
You don't believe a man can love you
For the rest of your life
Oh so, baby let me try, I wanna make you smile
I wanna love you like you need to be loved
I'll never let you down I'll always be around
And you should be mine
If he don't love you right, don't waste your time
If he don't treat you like you should, then you should be mine
Yo, what the deal honey, insecure, feeling funny
I know you're used to dealing with cats with real money
Also know you like Mase in alot of ways
But it's hard to go on when your lonely on the holidays
When you shop should you shop for two
Take you where the waters aqua blue
Let you fall back, treat you like you all that
Under umbrellas with your shades and your straw hat
You ain't the one out clubbin' all day and all night
Just to save a fight you say what's right
And I know he ain't the cat that will stay in your life
Even though he gave you ice that'll make you his wife
How a man deserve you if he hurt you
How you give a woman 25 a curfew
Between me and you, you ain't heard that from me
'Cause Mase ain't the player with the PHD
Girl, come into my world
I'll love you the way that you need to be loved
No worries no more, girl open the door
And don't waste your time
'Cause you should be mine
If he don't love you right, don't waste your time
If he don't treat you like you should, then you should be mine
The lyrics to Brian McKnight's song "You Should Be Mine" features guest rapper Mase, who brings his signature flow to the song. In the first verse, Mase boasts about his success as a rapper while also complimenting McKnight's talent as an R&B singer. He then suggests that the woman in question should choose him over her current partner because he will treat her better. He promises to make her happy, love her the way she deserves, and always be there for her.
In the chorus, McKnight echoes Mase's sentiments, telling the woman that she deserves better than what her current partner is giving her. He encourages her to give him a chance to make her happy and love her the way she needs to be loved.
In the second verse, Mase continues to make his case for why the woman should choose him. He insinuates that her current partner is not treating her right and is not the type of man who will stay with her for the long haul. He contrasts this by promising to treat her like a queen and be there for her always.
Overall, the lyrics to "You Should Be Mine" revolve around the concept of choosing the right partner who will treat you the way you deserve to be treated. Both artists encourage the woman in question to choose them over her current partner, promising to be there for her, and love her the way she deserves.
