Silence Is Golden
Brian Pole & The Tremeloes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh don't it hurt deep inside
To see someone do something to her
Oh don't it pain to see someone cry
How especially if that someone is her

Silence is golden
But my eyes still see
Silence is golden, golden
But my eyes still see

Talking is cheap people follow like sheep
Even though there is no where to go
How could she tell he deceived her so well
Pity she'll be the last one to know

Silence is golden
But my eyes still see
Silence is golden, golden
But my eyes still see

How many times will she fall for his lines
Should I tell her or should I be cool
And if I tried I know she'd say I lied
Mind your business don't hurt her you fool

Silence is golden
But my eyes still see
Silence is golden, golden
But my eyes still see

But my eyes still see
But my eyes still see

Overall Meaning

"Silence Is Golden" by Brian Pole & The Tremeloes is a beautiful and poignant exploration of the pain and heartache caused by a loved one's betrayal. The lyrics express the deep hurt and sorrow experienced when witnessing someone, presumably the singer's romantic partner, being mistreated by someone else. The first verse reflects on the emotional agony of witnessing this mistreatment, emphasizing the singer's empathy towards the person being hurt, who is referred to as "her."

The chorus, "Silence is golden, but my eyes still see," suggests that even though silence may be a preferred response to such a situation, the pain and betrayal are still perceptible to the singer. It implies that staying silent and not intervening does not lessen the impact of witnessing this wrongdoing. The repetition of the phrase "Silence is golden" highlights the internal struggle of the singer between staying quiet and speaking up.

The second verse delves deeper into the complexity of the situation. It criticizes the societal tendency to blindly follow and conform, comparing people to sheep. Despite there being no clear solution or resolution, the verse also highlights the deceiving nature of the person who is causing the harm. It conveys a sense of pity for the person being hurt, as they may be the last to realize the deception.

The third verse introduces the dilemma faced by the singer. They question whether to inform the person being hurt about the deception or stay silent and mind their own business. The fear of being accused of lying, or worse, hurting the person they care about, leaves the singer torn. The line, "Mind your business, don't hurt her you fool," reflects the internal struggle and the notion that intervening may not always be the best course of action.

Overall, "Silence Is Golden" portrays the pain and internal conflict experienced when seeing someone you care about being mistreated. It confronts the anguish of witnessing betrayal and highlights the tension between staying silent and the desire to protect the person being hurt. Through its emotional lyrics, the song urges listeners to consider the consequences of silence and the importance of standing up against wrongdoing, even if it may be difficult or fraught with uncertainty.

love this vibe

That drummer was AWESOME! I'm learning that his name was Dave Munden, right? Kick ass drummer! Beautiful set, big drums, fun, articulate, busy playing (on the fills) and overall spot-on playing! I have never heard of Brian Poole and the Tremelos (or Tremoloes) until today. I read about them in the John Bonham biography called "Beast". Now I'm like, Wow! I mean, the group is kind of just OK, in terms of songwriting but that drummer had the moves!

@peterchecksfield9958

Dave Munden sadly died a couple of years ago, but yes he was fabulous (great singer too!). Check this out:

Brian Poole and the Tremeloes are most famous for being the band preferred by Decca records over the Beatles.

They got signed after Decca rejected the Beatles for a record contract.

@adrinathegreat3095

Kind of certainly in the USA many assume they were a flop, in the UK they were very popular Thier version of twist and shout made no.1 in 1963, and they had many other top 10 hits as well, after Brian left the tremeloes went onto to have a few big hits in their own right, so made Decca a lot of money.
Decca was at the time a huge record company with most of the UK's top recording artist's..
So they were hugely successful in Thier own right in the UK, but not in the USA

@c.syde65

Brian Poole is essentially the vocal equivalent of Paul McCartney in The Tremeloes.
