The Sound of Silence
Brothers 3 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I′ve come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said,
The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls

And tenement halls
And they were written in the sound of silence.

Overall Meaning

The Sound of Silence by Brothers 3 is a cover of the original song by Simon & Garfunkel. The song starts with the famous lines "Hello darkness, my old friend, I've come to talk with you again" which talk about the singer's relationship with darkness or emptiness in their life. The singer draws parallels between darkness and silence, both of which represent a lack of communication, and they mention that they have been visited by a vision in their sleep. The vision has left its seed in the singer's brain, which is the source of their inspiration for writing the song.

The second verse paints a picture of the singer's dream where they are walking alone on the streets, which could symbolize their feeling of isolation in their waking life. They are under a halo of a street lamp, and they turn their collar to the cold and damp. Suddenly, their eyes are stabbed by the flash of a neon light, splitting the night and touching the sound of silence. This could be interpreted as a moment of clarity for the singer when they realize the true meaning of silence.

The third verse talks about people's dependence on technology and their constant need for communication. The people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made, referring to the bright neon signs that people have become obsessed with. The sign flashed out a warning, and the people were reminded that the words of the prophets are written on subway walls and tenement halls. In other words, the singer's message is that one should look beyond the distractions of technology and listen to the sound of silence to truly understand themselves.

That would also have been a decent choice, but I think Boxer or Bridge are harder edged lyrically, with less emphasis on harmony, and a strong melodic line. Mrs. Robinson is very cynical...not that the Boxer isn't negative, but it's more hopeful in the end..."The fighter still remains" --but Mrs Robinson is stuck there (as she should be)... and doesn't fit the feel for Brothers3.

I love the harmonies, but people today want a beat and a lead and think of harmony as either unimportant or even negative.

The Boxer has such a great story line behind it I think I'd have tried that one on them.

Sound of Silence is too lonely a song, it's for people who want to listen and think deeply about its significance and its almost delicate harmonics and relatively soft lead...just not enough energy and not enough beat to it for this show.

When I listened with earbuds I was still amazed at how beautifully they did it. This is one of the songs you use for a slow down and depressurization in a concert, giving people a breather, it's not exactly quiet and intimate but it tends that way. I just think it was the wrong choice for this spot.

You can't beat that! You just can't.

Having watched both of their performances now, this is their best week, actually. I don't think they deserved to get this far, but if they already did and are obviously popular with people, I think they have done enough to make it through to next week.

That was good! Nice work on the harmonies, they tightened that up clearly. And they were faithful to the original in mood. Very nice.

I love the harmony. They sounded like the original but I was waiting that they do some tweak on the song that they can call their own but overall it was good for sticking to it.
