Born To Run
Bruce Springsteen (& the Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway nine,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin' out over the line
H-Oh, Baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young
'Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

Yes, girl we were

Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims
And strap your hands 'cross my engines
Together we could break this trap
We'll run till we drop, baby we'll never go back
H-Oh, Will you walk with me out on the wire
'Cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta know how it feels
I want to know if love is wild
Babe I want to know if love is real

Oh, can you show me

Beyond the Palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard
Girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in a mist
I wanna die with you Wendy on the street tonight
In an everlasting kiss

One, two, three, four!

The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Everybody's out on the run tonight
But there's no place left to hide
Together Wendy we can live with the sadness
I'll love you with all the madness in my soul
H-Oh, Someday girl I don't know when
We're gonna get to that place
Where we really wanna go
And we'll walk in the sun
But till then tramps like us
Baby we were born to run

Oh honey, tramps like us
Baby we were born to run

Come on with me, tramps like us
Baby we were born to run

Overall Meaning

The "Born to Run" lyrics by Bruce Springsteen describe the desire for escape from a monotonous everyday life in a town that crushes dreams and ambition, and the dreamers' hope for something better on the American horizon. The song's opening lines portray a stark contrast between the work-filled daylight hours and the dangerous, exciting nightlife. The phrase "runaway American dream" further alludes to an unequal society that is not sustainable where the only way to pursue dreams is to 'run'.

The subsequent lines within the first paragraph suggest that the young people ready for escape have cars and are ready to dream of what lies over the horizon. The line "H-Oh, Baby this town rips the bones from your back" shows the harsh reality of the current town's limitations, and the line "tramps like us, baby we were born to run" shows the desire to escape and search for freedom.

The second paragraph reveals the singer's love interest named 'Wendy' and how they want to venture away from the town together. The line "Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims And strap your hands 'cross my engines" suggests Wendy and the singer are meant for each other in the moment, looking to escape together, leaving everything else behind, holding on to each other for possible escape.

In conclusion, the song's message is about seeking freedom, running away in search of dreams and love. The lyrics suggest that the current reality of life is unbearable and that the only possibility to find something better is to escape.

How in God's name can anyone write a song like that at the age of 24/25 years is unbelievable. The greatest songwriter of our age! Must have heard Born to run 20 plus times live, you know what's coming, you know gonna happen, but it still blows your mind when the first and last chord is struck. Thanks for the ride, Bruce.

@user-sw4vi8bn6o

He wrote it at the age of 23! He said he wanted to write the greatest R&R song of all time! His quote, I think he succeeded!!

@MrJonpac

Only 20 times. I listen 20 times a day

I had to put my dog down during the summer of 2022, she had completely deteriorated and couldn’t really walk anymore. Her passing completely shattered my heart as she has been a major part of my life. As I’m driving away from the vets office this song starts playing and I just start bawling, this song gave me so much comfort in that moment and I felt like she was finally able to run again and be free. What an amazing song perfect for an amazing dog like her <3
