Born To Run
Bruce springsteen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the day we sweat it out on the streets
Of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory
In suicide machines
Sprung from cages on Highway 9
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin' out over the line
Oh, baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young
'Cause tramps like us, baby, we were born to run
Yes, girl, we were

Wendy, let me in, I wanna be your friend
I wanna guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims
And strap your hands 'cross my engines
Together we could break this trap
We'll run 'til we drop, baby, we'll never go back
Oh, will you walk with me out on the wire?
'Cause, baby, I'm just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta know how it feels
I want to know if love is wild
Babe, I want to know if love is real
Oh, can you show me

Beyond the Palace, hemi-powered drones
Scream down the boulevard
Girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in the mist
I wanna die with you, Wendy, on the street tonight
In an everlasting kiss

(One, two, three, four)

The highway's jammed with broken heroes
On a last chance power drive
Everybody's out on the run tonight
But there's no place left to hide
Together, Wendy, we can live with the sadness
I'll love you with all the madness in my soul
Oh, someday, girl, I don't know when
We're gonna get to that place
Where we really wanna go and we'll walk in the sun
But 'til then, tramps like us
Baby, we were born to run

Oh honey, tramps like us
Baby, we were born to run

Come on with me, tramps like us
Baby, we were born to run

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen describe the daily struggle of making ends meet and chasing the American Dream. He talks about how people sweat it out on the streets, trying to make a living, but at night, they escape reality by driving through mansions in their suicide machines. The song's title implies that it's a song about running away from the daily grind and finding something more fulfilling. In essence, the lyrics are a call to arms, urging young people to escape their small town lives and go out and explore the world before they settle down.

In the second verse, Springsteen sings to a woman named Wendy, asking to be let into her life as a friend and lover. He describes a moment where they're driving together with the wind in their hair, and he wants to know if love is wild and real. This verse gives the song a romantic edge and adds a touch of vulnerability to the otherwise confident portrayal of American youth.

The third verse is a description of Springsteen's hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey. He describes a world where kids hang out on the beach and try to pick up girls, while muscle cars roar down the boulevard. The final lines of the song describe a sense of hope that someday they'll find a place where they can be free and happy.

How in God's name can anyone write a song like that at the age of 24/25 years is unbelievable. The greatest songwriter of our age! Must have heard Born to run 20 plus times live, you know what's coming, you know gonna happen, but it still blows your mind when the first and last chord is struck. Thanks for the ride, Bruce.

He wrote it at the age of 23! He said he wanted to write the greatest R&R song of all time! His quote, I think he succeeded!!

I had to put my dog down during the summer of 2022, she had completely deteriorated and couldn’t really walk anymore. Her passing completely shattered my heart as she has been a major part of my life. As I’m driving away from the vets office this song starts playing and I just start bawling, this song gave me so much comfort in that moment and I felt like she was finally able to run again and be free. What an amazing song perfect for an amazing dog like her <3
