Somewhere Trouble Don't Go
Buddy Miller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Devil had a daughter
Took me to deep water
Tried to kill me with a kiss
She said "hey now honey"
What about the money
I said "I ain't got time for this"

Take me, take me somewhere trouble don't go
Make me, make me someone trouble don't know

She said baby come inside
I said sorry I got to ride
Sorry but I got to ride
You know you could end up dead
Sleeping in the devil's bed
Sleeping in the devil's bed

Take me, take me somewhere trouble don't go
Make me, make me someone trouble don't know, yeah

Baby wants to drive my car
But she wants to go too far
But she wants to go too far
First comes love it's so fine
Here comes heartache right behind
Here comes heartache right behind

My baby used to be so sweet
Now she won't come down my street
Now she won't come down my street

All my plans got derailed
She locked up my heart in jail
She locked up my heart in jail

Take me, take me somewhere trouble don't go
Make me, make me someone trouble don't know

Take me, take me somewhere trouble don't go
Make me, make me someone trouble don't know

Overall Meaning

Buddy Miller's "Somewhere Trouble Don't Go" is a song that revolves around a man who is being seduced by the devil's daughter. The first two lines, "Devil had a daughter, took me to deep water" introduces the devil's daughter as a seductive and dangerous woman. She tried to kill the man with a kiss, but he refuses her advances by saying "I ain't got time for this". The singer tries to distance himself from the woman but she keeps insisting, asking about the money, and tries to convince him to come inside.

The chorus speaks of the singer's desire to escape the troubles of his current situation. He wants to be taken to somewhere where trouble cannot follow him and wants to become someone that trouble doesn't know. He is aware that if he continues to engage with the devil's daughter, he is going to end up dead. The line "Sleeping in the devil's bed" illustrates the metaphorical danger that the singer is in if he chooses to go down the wrong path.

The second verse speaks of how the singer knows that he cannot trust the devil's daughter due to her intentions of going too far and eventually causing heartache. The singer's lover who used to be sweet is now distant, refusing to come down his street, which is a metaphor for the breakdown of their relationship. The metaphor of being locked up in jail illustrates the feeling of being trapped and unable to get out of a situation.

Two of the most talented artists on the planet. Emmylou is speechless.

Mezbourian

You know that's not Emmylou, right? That's Buddy's wife Julie Miller, a good songwriter herself.

John Hunt

@Mezbourian You know that Emmylou is the woman to Buddy's left, right? Though she really ought to be speechless when someone else is playing!

Mezbourian

@John Hunt Yes, thanks, I did recognize Emmy Lou. I like Julie a lot, I have two CDs of hers, one of which has a gorgeous duet of a Civil War song she did with Emmy Lou. Have actually seen Buddy live with Emmy Lou but not with Julie.

John Hunt

@Mezbourian Emmy Lou really is the real deal! My band does a few Buddy covers, but that's the closest I've come to the man. Little jealous!

Who was sitting between Patti Griffin and Emmy Lou? Whatever this was I want to see it!
