Ives began his career as an itinerant singer and guitarist, eventually launching his own radio show, The Wayfaring Stranger, which popularized traditional folk songs. In 1942, he appeared in Irving Berlin's This Is the Army and became a major star of CBS Radio. In the 1960s, he successfully crossed over into country music, recording hits such as "A Little Bitty Tear" and "Funny Way of Laughin'". Ives was also a popular film actor through the late 1940s and '50s. His film roles included parts in So Dear to My Heart (1948) and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), as well as the role of Rufus Hannassey in The Big Country (1958), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Ives is often associated with the Christmas season. He did voice-over work as Sam the Snowman, narrator of the classic 1964 Christmas television special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Ives also worked on the special's soundtrack, including the songs "A Holly Jolly Christmas" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", both of which continue to chart annually on the Billboard holiday charts into the 2020s.
You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch
Burl Ives Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No one knew he was here
All the who's
Were all dreaming
Sweet dreams without care
You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch
You really are a heel
You're as charming as an eel
Mr. Grinch
You're a bad banana
With a greasy black peel
You're a monster, Mr. Grinch
Your heart's an empty hole
Your brain is full of spiders
You've got garlic in your soul
Mr. Grinch
I wouldn't touch you
With a thirty-nine
And-a-half foot pole
All I need is a reindeer
So he took his dog, Max
And he took some red thread
And he tied a big horn
On the top of his head
Then the Grinch said "Giddap"
And the sleigh started down
To the homes
Where the who's lay
A-snooze in their town
"This is stop number one
"The old Grinchy Claus hissed
And he climbed to the roof
Empty bags in his fist
Then he slid down the chimney
A rather tight pinch
But, if Santa could do it
Then so could the Grinch
Then he slithered and slunk
With a smile most unpleasant
Around the whole room
And he took every present
Pop guns, and bicycles
Roller skates, drums
Checkerboards, tricycles
Popcorn, and plums
And he stuffed them
In bags
Then the Grinch
Very nimbly
Stuffed all the bags
One by one
Up the chimney
You're a foul one
Mr. Grinch
You're a nasty
Wasty skunk
Your heart is full
Of unwashed socks
Your soul
Is full of gunk
Mr. Grinch
The three words
That best describe you
Are as follows
And I quote
"Stink. Stank. Stunk"
You nauseate me, Mr. Grinch
With a nauseaus super-naus
You're a crooked jerky jockey
And you drive a crooked horse
Mr. Grinch
You're
A three decker saurkraut
And toadstool sandwich
With arsenic sauce
The song "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" is a composition by Albert Hague and was written by Dr. Seuss. The song is a part of the 1966 television adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The song narrates the actions and characteristics of the Grinch who's characterized as a mean-spirited and arrogant creature who hates Christmas, who descends on Whoville to steal Christmas from the Whos. The opening lyrics of the song: "All the windows were dark, No one knew he was here, All the who's were all dreaming Sweet dreams without care" highlights the calm state of Whoville, a contrast to the acts the Grinch will inflict. The song calls the Grinch all sorts of names; mean, nasty, wasty skunk, three-decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce, with a heart full of unwashed socks and with a smile most unpleasant.
Throughout the song, the Grinch is portrayed as an individual with terrible character traits, such as greed, arrogance, selfishness and contempt. He's further described as someone with no morals or good characteristics, this directly relates to his action of stealing Christmas from the Whos. This song emphasizes the moral theme of the story, that Christmas is all about giving, selflessness, and generosity, rather than receiving. The song portrays the Grinch as an unpleasant character with a corrupt soul, while the Whos are portrayed as kind and loving individuals who choose to hold onto the Christmas spirit despite not having Christmas things available.
