I was a creative director working on Fortune 500 brands and IP’s like Marvel / Star Wars for over 20 years. Eventually I walked away from the all the corporate industry bs to create my own clothing lines and fulfill my actual dreams as a creative. I don’t regret the time I spent working for those big brands cause I gained great experience but I should have taken the leap much earlier. It’s never too late. Great video! 👍

Thanks for the advice. I'm 52 and quit the manufacturing world after 29 years. I got so tired of the corporate puppets coming down and acting like tyrants I turned walk in and handed in my 30 day notice. I worked as a supervisor but it turned into a supervisor, manager, HR and Safety manager job and expected us to work 12 hour days seven days a week. I decided screw that paid everything off I own. I now make knives and jewelry as my hobby and help my kids out with their business. Best thing I could of done.

From somebody who's done this: There is a difference between fear of failure and fear of homelessness. When I got five mortgage payments behind, I was no longer focusing my creative energy on writing, I was losing sleep because I was about to lose my house. For a novelist anyway, I think the idea of quitting your day job is really bad advice. I have found it easier to be creative when I don't have to worry about where my next house payment is coming from. I've written six novels, one of them while unemployed and "chasing my dream." Lemme tell you - financial desperation does not improve your odds. I can still produce 10,000 words a week just fine as somebody who gets a paycheck. And my books still don't sell. That problem is not solved by adding the anxiety of having no income. .02 from somebody who tried it and lost.

As someone who has had to struggle in and out of homelessness starting at age 18, I agree with you. It's the worst advice you can give people who have to live in what I call financial realities. I also avoid listening to people now who have the privilege of living outside these realities. They have choices to make I don't have and the result of that is they will always see things differently.

@Tony L sacrificing sleep is never a good idea. Burnout and tiredness will make you make bad decisions, get cranky, gain weight, and a whole other slew of health issues. It will also diminish your quality of creativity and cause you to make mistakes.

If people are telling you no, MAYBE THEY KNOW A LOT BETTER THAN YOU DO. Maybe. Something to consider. Sometimes others know us better than we know ourselves. It depends. Dismissing it with "they're expressing their own fears" is a lopsided way of looking at it.

@Aileensea I never said they weren't fearful. I said casting aside elderly opinions when they don't align with yours and just chalking it up to them being afraid is foolish. Sometimes age has nothing to do with it and its simply the fact that they care so much about you that they don't want to see you hurt. This can be true for someone of any age. Of course the world is different and everyone has different experiences and in the end you have to make your own choices whether they turn out good or bad. The point is not to discard their experience though because you think they don't understand, but to figure out how to use their caution to help you see things you might not otherwise have been open to.

Absolutely love this! This has hit home on so many levels. I will leaving my job soon after over 12 years in a decent government position, saying goodbye to the promise of healthcare and a decent pension. My soul was dying inside. Ever since I was a little kid, I was told how we need to get a job, work your life away, and eventually retire. I watched as my dad went off to teach kids every day and then return, a very honorable individual who contributed to society by taking on the task of trying to educate and mold students to learn. My dad was definitely a great man, but something I always wondered as I listened to my family and society is what was the point of it all? I see people wasting away, miserable at these things we're supposed to want, where they brag about having these overly expensive things. Then one day, I looked at my family, looked at their mindset and realized how I wanted none of it. I didn't want to waste my life doing a job, I didn't want or care about those nice things, I didn't give a damn about money, where the only reasons I pursued a paycheck was because it was a means to have a roof over my head and food. I came to the realization that work is worthless, it'll do nothing in the end and that we as a species need to focus more on our time, not wasting it working for someone else.

This is a great sentiment, but of course we are forced to work on end because we will need it when we grow old, we need money to pay for meds and hospital bills, and also of course food on the table and roof over our heads, but I agree with you, we don't need excess money in exchange of wasting our life away having a very stressful 9 to 5 jobs, because at the end of the day, what if you died, will you be able to take those material things with you?

To live the dream you have to have the balls to quit that salary job and the peer group pressure we all feel when working in the corporate world. I quit 6 years ago and wake up every morning and do what I feel like doing. It's the most liberating feeling you can imagine. I'm now 54 and enjoy so much time with my kids. Something that's not possible when working in the corporate world. I make more money now than I've ever made being an employee and I don't have to deal with those ass licking creeps who play the company politics to further their own benefits. Don't be fearful..just get out there and do what you want to do.,

After languishing and struggling existentially throughout my 30s, I'm finally buckling down to recommit myself to the two areas in which I feel most competent and confident: writing and being a personal trainer. For too long, I've held onto too many other "dreams" that really functioned as distractions from the main dream, which is to be a published novelist. I've started working in earnest to improve my mental health and self-love, to stop punishing myself, to let go of the pain, anger, and loss that I've lived through and that have become the defining features of my life, far more than hope or any single dream. I'm fighting to make my 40s the decade in which I live the dreams of my 20s. And if it costs me a decade, well, with any luck, I'll still have a few more left to enjoy it.

My Great-Grandmother dropped out of high school at 14 to help on the farm in 1913. She graduated high school at 94 and walked across the stage with my sister and they both received their diplomas together. It was always a dream of hers to graduate, she was blind and did the course work with braille in her early 90's.

Just before his death at 91, my father was ready to start another in a long line of businesses he birthed in his lifetime. At 71, I am a year away from opening my first Cafe...after losing my last small business of thirty years to our most recent recession/depression. I love this! My grandfather had 3 careers in his 92 years. I'm turning 40 this year and feel like I just started living. My daughters is 20, hates college and doesn't know what her passion is and is so worried about disappointing us if she drops out because she gets free tuition from me working there. I told her I just found out my passion so you have time. No worries! Only way she can disappoint me is by looking back at 40 and wishing she followed her passion and not her parents dream for her. And now I can quit my job (which is miserable). I started a podcast this year and plan on moving out of state for the first time and just have this free feeling and I love it.

I walked away from my career after 7 years of college and 25 years on the job because of anxiety. I could no longer take the daily pressure. I tried everything to get over it and eventually walked away. It was very hard to give up something I was good at and enjoyed. I have started my own business now and doing fine financially but I do miss it. Just getting over your fear as he suggests isn’t always so easy.

Gil B I know it’s tough bro, I used to be the same way. In 2016 I decided to live out my dream and started up my own DJ Entertainment business as I play the piano and harp as well, and I did this because I realized once I’m in my 70s, I won’t be able to Live out my dreams because I will be too old, and I do not want to die with regret wishing that I took a risk, and I would be happy with trying and failing then they were trying at all. Now, I DJ for USC for their corporate parties and I’m busy every weekend deejaying for all kinds of events, and trust me, people I grew up with were hating on me, and I did not get support from people that I thought I would, but I came to a place that the negativity I got from people, our use that to motivate me and show them that I can do this. You can do this, but you have to somehow not be around those people who are not supportive.

Don’t simply quit, find a goal and take steps before you jump off a cliff onto your face!
I had a successful sales job for years and I hated it. I finally started taking steps to get a contractor license to hang Xmas lights. Then expanded to handyman services. I set my hours, pay, and deal with customers I like 👍
I don’t make as much money, but I can watch this video and walk my dog without some corporate jerk asking for my sales numbers whilst breathing down my neck!
I feel paid by giving myself more life worth living. I make the decisions and am completely responsible for my failures and successes. It’s freeing to be more in control of your day. Good luck, take steps, work hard for yourself! If you are successful then give back to the community and help others. Hire workers and treat them better. It will pay you back in multitude ❤️

I actually listened to my intuition and followed my heart for my dreams and I've now been homeless. I think that a tenure professor like him with a partner saying this is different than someone who is actually already living in poverty to say this. If you don't have shelter, you cannot work on your art and your dreams. It's more about survival at this point.

How are you doing now? Any update? If I were in your shoes I will definitely open my own clinic, this is surprising as doctors are not going to lose jobs, unless you are barred or your license revoked. Where I'm at, I know some cab drivers, one of them a chemical engineer, and the other an architect, driving cabs, that's because they still need to take certifications to be proven as such, but they used to practice their qual on the country they originated from.

In 2013, I quit my job to fulfill my dream of moving to the Southwest. I had flown out, bought a house & enrolled my son in high school. I then flew back & drove my son & dog out here from the East Coast. I chose not to work for 7 months & then landed the perfect job. Still at the same job almost a decade later. Some of the questions I got are “you’re not scared?”, “you don’t have a job lined up?” of course it was scary, but it was also extremely liberating & everything worked out.

@Marcus C It really depends on what is your "KnowHow". Also it depends on what your government demands. Here in Slovenia it is quite simple to start a small business. I design and produce electronic circuits on demand, so my area is very narrow. I started it when I was still in my job and when it was too much effort to have both, I have quit. It's my 8th year now, 3rd year self employed. I have only one product I sell myself and it is "Bee hive monitoring scale". I Wish you luck in what you decide to do.

@Jerry Cannon I'm self employed entrepreneur, electronics engineer, very small but stable business. I design and produce different electronic projects, for example remote bee hive monitoring, electric vehicle charging, parking space occupancy and such. I have a small production line for electronic assembly with stencil printer, pick&place machine and reflow line and bunch of other tools. I started working on NB-IoT, which will consume my winter months. I have a lot of spare time for other things and which is most important, very little stress. Wish you all the best.

Quit my 9-5 aged 23 coz I wanted to change the world. Became a nurse. Now 49 and still have huge passion for a job that changes daily and can present any challenge throughout a shift. My "problem" is I don't have dreams. I'm curious and have lots of interests and hobbies, but nothing makes me feel so passionate about it that I know I want to make that activity "my mission in life". What I know I want is at least time to dedicate to my interests, though at times I feel sort of missing out on purpose or at least passionate drive.

Well said. I am in my 50's and have never once had a calling or passion, that I can remember. Even had career and life training, nothing. Owned and run my own business for thirty years now and have never once been passionate about it. Very successful, a master at what I do, but have outgrown my career. Always thinking about what would I love to do if I could do anything, mostly just want to be retired! I think we just get to a point when we are worn out and lack the motivation of someone younger. I know it sounds sad, but I am happy with it.

I had a similar experience, friends essentially calling me arrogant for leaving what we all thought was a job for life on an assembly line. I moved 800 miles away and discovered a career and life that suited me much more. Within 5 years, all of my former colleagues had lost their jobs when globalisation and automation replaced them.

I appreciate people who are working part or full time and working on their passions on the side (whether or not they get paid). We need to create a different mindset from what's preached to us by our culture. Sometimes our passions are not going to be monetized. If that's the end goal, then we're missing the point. More power to people if they can fill themselves up by doing what they love and developing meaningful relationships with the ones who they love.

there is a fine line you must listen to BEFORE you quit.

1. Have goals or at least an understanding what is possible and put that in practice BEFORE you quit.
2. Make sure you have proper income to survive by paying the bills and taxes, otherwise you will lose more than you walked away from.

I'm 37 years old and never lived my dreams. It was mostly from my parents not supporting my passion for art and photography most of my life because they didn't think it would make enough. I'm currently working a full time job and can't pay rent, but I got my drone license and now have the opportunity of doing wedding photography. I got paid more in one day doing that now than an entire two week paycheck. I'm about to try to plan on quitting my day job and go full time freelance photographer and hopefully volunteer for film production and selling my art. Please don't underestimate your talents like I did all my youth. At least try before you decide to give up if it doesn't work out.

I am an artist/comic creator and I quit my job as a box office employee due to mental health issues I started having. I started my comics on the side and had the day job, but when it got to be really taxing on me I had to quit that and started working fully on my artwork. Now yes I have had my ups and downs and my dark times, but I wouldn't want to go back to having burnout from my old job. I have been working hard on many projects and opened my own online shop. Really I feel this is what I was ment to do. This is what i really needed to do.. Face my fears and just do what I feel is right with taking my own path.

If this is you, get your finances in order, build your credentials, make connections and locate mentors, and transform your vision into a plan. One dream I've been putting on hold: screenwriting. It's something I've been seriously considering since I was a teen for two reasons: 1) I love writing & reading & 2) Screenwriting is a somewhat more stable career than acting because you develop the material rather than wait to audition for it. The one step I'm taking is cutting back on procrastination, which needless to say, really puts you down.

My friend was always working on his screenplay. He carried 3x5 cards with the notes and scripts on them.
Anyway, thia went on for about 2 yrs. I help him with some it.
Finally, some company bought his screenplay for 250k$. He quit and moved to LA.
Last I heard he is working g on a movie.
We all talk about him as one of those dudes that made it.

Most companies these days are large corporations ,therefore the real bosses are the corporate bosses in which the site manager is a puppet.3/4 of corporate bosses are college trained and doesn't know much about the money making bare operations of a company. I cut meat for 24 years &experienced this with southeastern grocers a.k.a. Winn Dixie/big-lo/fresco supermarkets.these closed 100 stores in one day because they tried to micro manage the stores from corporate(big mistake)the results(bankruptcy)

The older you get, the harder it is to serve two masters. The pay becomes higher and harder to leave, and physical loss of energy is a reality. Doesn't mean it can't be done. Just be aware of some realities that it gets tougher, not easier as time goes on. I've lived through corporate jobs with good money and striking out on my own, only to find myself crying in the middle of my living room because I didn't know how I'd pay the rent. It's easy to take for granted the things we have when we fantasize about something better. There is a financial reality we have to account for. Get a plan. Live below your means. Figure out a way to do both as long as you need to...it doesn't have to be "either/or" it can be "either/and." At least for a period of time. Keep at it. What you want to do is get the horse running alongside the stagecoach before you take a leap. It may not be easy, but it's possible. Good luck to all reading this...we are all listening to this message and reading comments because of the same dissatisfaction....

You have to assess yourself and your happiness. This is my weekly topic for my own subscribers. Career. One thing that can really bring a person into depression is 40 hours a week of hating their job. The job is literally almost half of the waking life. The problem many people have is that they have a craving for security. The person will tolerate being unhappy if that is their normality. People would rather have secure bitterness than the fear of stepping off the cliff. The fact is that you can change your career anytime. At 40 or 50. I once knew a car salesman of 30 years who did really well but started to hate his job--so became a nurse at 57. He is now a travel contractor. His friends told him he would be 57 by the time he got licensed as an RN. He told them he would be 57 anyway. So he will now spend the next ten years doing something he likes instead of something he hates. But you have to decide if it is life on the sea you hate or just that ship you're traveling on. In other words--do you hate your trade or just the company you're at? But whatever you aren't happy with you must change and continue to advance yourself. Hope this helps someone---Charles.

My biggest fear is being an old man living every day with regret of not following my dreams. I just graduate last June of 2019 with a degree in Entrepreneurship and landed a job by August. While I was having the exam I knew in myself that it was not the job and thing I wanna do but I said I'll just need to do it. And so I proceed and finished the exam. Pass the interviews and fortunately I was hired. It has been 9 months now and I am not really happy with it. I tried embracing it but it really didn't work. I wanna quit because deep inside me I don't feel the sense of fulfillment. I already made my mind. I wanna leave. But I'm afraid in the idea that I haven't saved enough and where will I go after quitting especially this days that finding a job is not that easy. 😔

I'm 37 years old. I just made one of the biggest decisions of my life. I always wanted to become a full-time artist, and finally, I have resigned from my full-time employment to pursue my dreams. I am on my third day as a full-time artist and as much as I wanted this I was starting to doubt myself. Being on your own with your thoughts can drive you crazy. I was even questioning myself if I have reached a level of craziness. As much as I am trying to encourage myself, I was finding it hard to convenience myself. I was thinking that I might be naive or fooling myself. It's a constant weight on my head and chest. You can't just get rid of it. @Jack Bauer For 5 months, I tried to be a stock/crypto trader (can't suggest this one lol) and freelancing (try this one or better build your freelancing business before you quit your job) but these don't work for me.

So I just took rests, do counseling sessions with my psychologist instead, took vacations somewhere, and improve/add skills before I find another job.

This past weeks, I finally found a new employer that pays double as my previous salary! 😁

I suggest that if you really need to rest for the sake of your mental health, do it. Just make sure you have at least a 6 to 12 months emergency funds before you do it.

The hardest thing in life for me was to reinvent myself. I defined myself for what I did and what I owned. Once all of it fell apart, well, my ego was shattered. There was nothing left but to start again. It was painful for me but it didn't have to be. I know that now and I wish I had faced my circumstances diferently back then.

I have come to the conclusion that I wanna write books. So I'm currently writing, but keeps working my day job in the meantime. When I get a book released, I think I can go down in time at my day job. Not quitting, but working less time, giving me more time for writing more and getting more books out faster in the future. One of the saddest days of my life was my last day of my career, I don't think I've ever cried that much in my life in one day. But I kept telling myself that this was the right thing to do and the right time to do it (I was 54). The next day I woke up and thought "I never have to work again" and I went from crying to smiling right there. Yeah, I don't have the money I would have had if I'd kept working but I am so, so happy and very grateful/blessed which is a nice place to be.

So true! In my experience, I found that a true friend will really help you reach your vision. Not everybody is for you. Be careful who you share your vision with. I shared with like minded people who also have the same vision, but they tend to focus on themselves with others because of their long term relationship. I’m still the new guy I guess. I realize that they might not be for me. We all rap, sing, but the big difference is i also produce, and d.j. Cuz of my upbringing in the early 80’s. Any wisdom to provide? It can get lonely sometimes because I’m used to the iron sharpens iron mentality from the Bible.

I love Dr. Ken Atchity he's been what I have been saying for a few years now because sitting and waiting will produce NOTHING! You can not sit on one project forever you have to move on to other projects or risk floundering on the one ultimately getting nowhere. So glad I listened to that advice long along because it's all about choices.
