CD-I Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Melt the glaciers inside my veins
Thaw my eyes, crack the glaze
Trapped under ice at a fathomless depth
But I know I exist I can see my breath

Come up to the surface, the ice age has past
Hallelujah, it is over at last
A new day will follow a nuclear blast
Hallelujah, it is over at last
Crossed the great divide
To sleep where most would die
I'm on the lam for a fire theft
I wasn't here, we never met

Our shadows spread forever but they don't weigh anything
Shake it off
I can't ever go back but I will take it when I leave
Shake it off
I'll be waiting with a suitcase when the devil comes for me. Shake it off

One if by land, two if by sea
Life isn't ours, we are property of life
Life isn't ours, we are property of life
So, take what you can when you can while you can

Stare at the sun
Look directly into the sun
Stare at the sun

Look directly into the sun
It's over at last

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of CD-I's song 1977 carry a sense of liberation and the shedding of one's past. The opening lines- Melt the glaciers inside my veins, Thaw my eyes, crack the glaze - allude to frozen emotions and a numbed sense of being. The singer feels trapped under ice, but they are aware of their existence, they can see their breath. This is a metaphor for being stuck in a mental block, but not losing hope. The lyrics then take a turn towards the positive - the ice age has passed, a new day is following a nuclear blast. The singer has crossed the great divide and is sleeping where most would die. This can signify the willingness to take risks, to leave their safety net, and to embrace the new. They are on the lam for a fire theft - a metaphor for something they had to do, something that has caused them to seek refuge. They will take their experiences with them when they leave, shaking off their past and waiting with a suitcase, ready for a new journey.
